Natalie, a gifted New York photographer, has a troubled past reflected in her art. When she struggles to make ends meet in the city, her agent, arranges an assignment in Boston for a considerable sum of money. Unable to turn it down in her dire straits, Natalie takes the job -- only to find that her estranged gay brother, Roy, is the employer. Roy wants to mend their broken past, but must convince her to stay long enough to do so.
In this purely fictional story, Paul McCartney drops by The Dakota to visit John Lennon in 1976. Paul is still on top of the music world, reaching #1 with his new band, Wings. John, however, has retired from public life, choosing to raise his son, Sean. Rumors are rampant that The Beatles are going to reunite to play a concert. Paul, the consummate entertainer, is intrigued by the possibilities. But John, still fighting his inner demons, is content keeping Beatlemania a thing of the past. But even though the two men are still at odds over the band, they rediscover that they still have bonds from the past that will never go away.
프랭크 쇼어는 성자(혹은 성녀)로 추천받은 사람을 조사해 성자의 자격이 있는지를 판단하는 일을 맡은 수도사다. 얼마 전 성자로 추천되었던 사람을 잔인하게 비판해 끌어내린 뒤로는 '기적을 죽이는 자'라는 불명예스러운 별명으로 불리고 있다. 쇼어는 어느 날 매년 11월마다 피눈물을 흘리는 성모 마리아상을 조사하라는 명령을 받는다. 11월은 그 근처에서 루푸스 병에 걸린 소녀를 치유한 헬렌이라는 여자가 죽은 달이었다. 회의와 의심에 찬 쇼어는 헬렌이 성자라는 사실에 대한 믿음이 거의 없다. 그는 철저한 조사에 들어가기로 마음먹는다. 교회에서는 종파별로 기적에 대한 해석이 달라 논란이 많다. 게다가 쇼어는 죽은 헬렌의 딸 록산을 만나 헬렌의 무덤 앞에서 술잔을 나누며 가까운 사이가 된다. 미국에는 성자가 셋이면 족하다는 회의적인 주교의 압력도 무시할 수 없다. 그리고 기적으로 치유되었다는 소녀는 마약과 매춘에 찌들어 살아가고 있다. 기적이 낭비되었다는 소녀 어머니의 탄식에 쇼어는 씁쓸함만을 느낄 뿐이다. 결국 각자 다른 생각과 신념을 가진 쇼어 수도사와 교주는 테이블을 가운데 두고 마주 앉는다.
