1944년 7월 7일 역사적인 옥쇄돌격으로 거의 전멸당한 일본군 사이판 수비대는 오바 대위를 중심으로 49명이 생존. 게릴라전을 전개하면서 8월 15일이후에도 항복하지 않다가 직속상관의 항복명령서를 받고 45년 12월 1일 정식 항복했다.(47명) 항복할때도 대오를 갖춰서 군가 보병의 본령을 부르며 행진한 후 미국주둔 사이판 사령관에게 군도를 바치는 식으로 완료했으며, 전사자 추모를 위해 조총까지 3발 쐈다고 한다.
