쿤둔은 1941년에 태어나 세 살에 렌팅 린포체에게 발견되어 쿤둔('성하'라는 뜻)의 자리에 오르고 18세에 달라이 라마로 등극한 후 중국의 티벳 침략 때문에 인도로 망명을 떠난, 살아있는 신 달라이 라마의 이야기다. 영화는 선과 악 어느 한 쪽에 손을 들어주지 않은 채 어린 달라이 라마의 눈으로 바라본 세상을 담담하게 그린다.
