It's a story about a group of Hollywood assistants who use their positions to lie, con, and blackmail their way into producing their own movie. Though it's funny, certainly, there's also great truth in it. In the film, all these twentysomethings - wannabe actors, writers, directors, craftsmen, etc. - yearn, dream, hope and pray to one day be a success in the film business like those they work for and see all around them. Be careful what you wish for - particularly in Hollywood.

A desperate young writer is lured on a wild ride through the desert by a mysterious woman in this darkly comic take on the all-American road trip. 벌건 대낮에 한 술집에서 살인 사건이 일어난다. 목격자인 리오넬은 눈앞에서 사람이 쓰러지는 모습에 기겁을 하고 총을 쏜 제이크는 리오넬을 달래며 무언가 하던 일을 계속 진행하려고 애를 쓴다. 하지만 결국 리오넬은 현금이 든 돈 가방을 뒤로 하고 술집에서 도망치고 현장에 있던 범인, 술집 주인, 손님, 들이닥친 경관 두 명과 죽은 줄 알았던 살해자는 리오넬이 두고 간 현금을 챙긴다. 이들은 사기극 전문가들로 정해진 배역으로 매번 표적을 정해 사기극을 벌이고 돈을 챙기는 수법을 쓴다. 하지만 다음 날, 미끼 역할을 했던 알폰스가 사체로 발견되고 사기극 멤버인 제이크, 고르도, 마일스는 한 자리에 모인다. 알고 보니, 어제 사기를 쳤던 리오넬은 악명 높은 킹의 회계사로, 그 현금은 킹이 수금한 돈이었던 것이다. 킹이 자신들을 쫓고 있다는 사실을 알게 된 제이크는 킹을 찾아가 거래를 제안한다. 킹이 표적을 정해 주면 그 자에게 사기를 쳐서 얻는 돈을 반으로 나누어 갖기로 말이다. 킹은 자기 부하 한 명을 사기극에 포함하는 조건으로 제안을 수락한다. 킹이 정해 준 표적은 유명한 갑부인 프라이스. 공금 횡령을 쉽게 하기 위해 직접 은행을 세운 대대적인 사기꾼 갑부이다. 제이크는 길에서 만난 소매치기 릴리를 팀에 합류시키고 거사를 준비하는데...
