This actioner is set in a remote, heavily forested area in Northern California where marijuana growers raise their illegal crops and run whole communities with their terrorist tactics and wealth. The tale centers on the efforts of a fearless New York cop to free one such community from the tyranny of the pot growers. It begins with a surveyor who is leading the town's crooked sheriff to a small marijuana field he has just discovered. The surveyor is killed before he can get there. Joshua, a small boy, sees the execution and tries to get back in time to tell his parents. Unfortunately, the killers murder his family and throw him off a cliff. The boy's aunt, worried at not hearing from her family, gets suspicious and asks an old flame, NY cop Joe Dillon, to investigate. The town sheriff is not pleased by his intrusion and warns him to stay out of it. Dillon disobeys, and that is where all the action comes in.

손님들이 거의 내린 스쿨 버스가 달려간다. 대화를 나누는 두 명의 여학생, 그리고 맨 뒷자리엔 주인공 제시가 타고 있다. 버스가 갑자기 속도를 내더니, 도로를 벗어나 어둡고 황양한 길을 달린다. 그리고 운전기사는 어느덧 날카로운 손을 가진 괴물로 변하고 이윽고 버스가 서자, 지진이 일어난 듯 주위의 땅들이 내려앉더니, 곧 버스가 있던 자리만 빼고는 주위가 모두 깊숙하고 거대한 웅덩이가 된다. 높고 가느다란 기둥에 떨어질 듯 흔들흔들 거리는 버스. 프레디로 변한 괴물이 날카로운 칼장갑을 펼쳐들고 점점 다가온다. 그리고 제시에게 내리치려는 순간, 제시는 온몸이 땀으로 흠벅 젖은 채 비명을 지르며 악몽에서 깨어난다. 여고생 낸시가 악마 프레디와 대결하여 싸운 지 5년이 지난 엘름가 1428번지, 그곳에는 새로이 올슈가가 이사를 오고, 이 가족의 일원인 제시는 밤마다 이런 괴물이 등장하는 악몽에 시달리게 된다. 리자라는 여자 친구도 사귄 제시는 학교에서 엘름가에서 일어났던 살인 사건을 듣지만 믿지 않는다. 그날 밤, 또다시 꿈속에서 지하실에서 모자를 쓴 프레디를 발견한다. 곧 그와 마주치게 되고 그의 흉칙한 모습에 비명을 지르며 깨어난다. 어느날 방청소를 하던 제시와 리사는 전주인인 낸시 톰슨이 악마와의 일들을 기록해 둔 일기장을 발견하게 된다. 쇠갈퀴를 가진 프레디라는 괴물, 지하실에 데려가 죽이려했고, 티나라는 여학생이 죽었다는 등 끝까지 오삭한 내용이 이어지고 있었는데...

흑인 청년인 케니 커크란드는 음악 창조에 탁월한 능력을 가지고 있지만 기본적인 작업환경도 갖춰저있지 않아서 기회를 엿보면 DJ생활을 하고 있다.형은 깡패와 싸우다 죽고, 엄마와 브레이크 댄스를 잘 추는 동생 리와 함께 살고 있는 케니는 자칭 매니저로 나선 수다꾼 챨리의 주선으로 결국 스타덤에 오른다. 그러면서 케니처럼 현대 음악을 작곡하고 대학에서 교편을 잡고 있는 트레이시와 사랑에 빠지게 된다. 전철이나 벽에다 낙서가 아닌 예술 작품을 그려 도시 환경을 아름답게 만들겠다는 케니의 친구 레이몬은 친구들 외에는 인정해 주지 않는 외로운 예술가이다. 아버지의 구박과 카르멘과 결혼하지 않고 낳은 아들과 살 집이 없어 친정에 맡겨 놓고 있어 고민하다, 친구들의 도움으로 빈 아파트를 수리하고 취직을 해서 생활인으로 전환한다. 그러다가, 새로 나온 하얀 새 전철에 그림을 그리다가, 전부터 자신을 그림에 낙서를 하던 스핏을 발견하고 쫓다가, 격투 끝에 그와 감전으로 사망한다. 케니는 레이몬의 작품을 전시하고 그를 추모하는 음악회를 열어 성공리에 끝내고, 아들이 전철이나 벽에 낙서나 한다고 생각하던 케니의 아버지도 죽은 아들이 남긴 그림을 보고는 감탄하고는 후회한다.

The film tells the story of Bill, a young, successful stockbroker who zips off to Greenwich Village on his motorcycle when no one's looking to venture into the hippy counterculture world. His wife, Nancy, is the dream of every middle-class male. She is liberated enough to go around bra-less, enjoy sex, and be the perfect mother for their child. Nancy, however, is unaware of her husband's excursions and happily attends the local ecology awareness meetings without Bill. Bill soon becomes involved with Gordon, an Andy Warhol-type character whose protege, Roz, fascinates the square young businessman. After witnessing a wild party on Fire Island, Bill realizes that this crowd is not for him (shallow, lifeless) and that he does not even want to have sex with Roz because he is lonely for his wife. Nancy arrives unexpectedly on the island to reclaim her husband and together they walk off into the sunset hand in hand.
