아들 매트의 암을 치료하기 위해 가족들을 데리고 코네티컷주로 이사를 오게 된 사라. 그녀는 매력적인 빅토리아식 새집에 얽힌 어두운 비밀을 가족들에게 감추지만, 몸이 약한 매트는 이사 첫 날부터 알 수 없는 존재와 집안에서 벌어지는 미묘한 변화에 시달린다. 가족들은 이런 매트를 단순한 약물 치료로 인한 환각과 스트레스탓으로 돌리지만 얼마 지나지 않아 마루 아래에서 죽은 자를 깨우는 강령술 사진들이 발견되면서 가족들은 걷잡을 수 없는 두려움에 사로잡힌다. 과거 이 곳에서 벌어진 어린 소녀를 영매로 한 소름끼치는 강령술 모임. 온갖 문자가 새겨진 시체... 과연 이들을 극한의 공포로 몰아넣은 혼령의 정체는 무엇이며, 과거 이 집에서는 무슨 일이 벌어졌던 것일까?
