알렉스는 취미삼아 온라인 포커를 즐기거나, 친구들과 직접 포커를 치는 평범한 법대생이다. 어느날 알렉스는 한 온라인 포커 대전에 참가하여 결승까지 오르게 되는데, 결승전은 TV로 생중계 된다. 알렉스는 결승 게임에 오르자마자 '레이저'라는 프로 포커꾼의 꾀에 넘어가서 탈락하지만, 이 중계를 보던 은퇴한 포커꾼 타미는 알렉스의 잠재력을 알아보고 직접 찾아가 명함을 건네며 도와주겠다고 제안한다. 타미는 알렉스에게 포커판에서 이기는 법을 전수해주는대신, 알렉스가 따는 돈의 50%를 달라고 한 것이다. 타미는 포커판에서 전재산을 거의 잃을 뻔하고, 한 번만 더 포커를 하면 이혼을 하겠다는 부인의 말에 은퇴를 한 상태였지만, 알렉스를 제자로 받아들이게 되면서 함께 라스베가스로 날아가 큰 판돈이 걸린 포커판에 다시 뛰어들게 된다.
