5년 전, 안테리아라는 혹성에 갔던 노인들이 자기네가 본래 살던 요양소(양노원)에 다시 찾아오면서 갖가지 재미있는 사건이 벌어진다. 벤과 메어리 부부가 먼저 TV를 통해 손자 데이빗과 만나고 뒤이어 며느리 수잔을 만나면서 이들이 죽은 줄로만 알았던 수잔이 졸도를 한다. 이어서 아트와 조, 알마, 베스가 버니가요양소 생활에 절망을 느낀 나머지 버니가 자살하려던 순간에 나타난다. 안테리아 별에서는 늙거나 병에 걸리거나 죽은 일이 없기 때문에 세월이 흘렀음에도 아트 일행은 예전 그대로인데 버니는 늙은 것이다. 한편 배 밑창이 유리로 된 유람선 선장 잭은 갑자기 나타난 외계인 여자 친구 키티를 만나 재회의 기쁨과 함께 독특한 외계인식 나눠가짐(성행위)도 갖는다. 이때, 심해 밑바닥에 설치해 둔 코쿤(외계인이 들어 있는 거대한 조가비) 가운데 하나가 지진으로 인해 튕겨져 나옴으로써 러시아 해양학 연구소 측에 발견되어 죽게 될 위기에 빠지자, 이 문제로 파견된 키티는 잭에게 도움을 청하고 동시에 아트 등 지구 출신에게도 도움을 청하게 된다. 그 사이에 외계에서 돌아온 노인들은 젊은 농구선수들과 시합을 벌여 극적으로 이기는 묘기를 보여준다. 한편, 베스와 아트 사이엔 노령에도 불구하고 아이가 태어나고, 홀아비 버니는 역시 혼자된 루비와 사랑이 싹트고, 벤은 손자의 야구 훈련을 도와주고, 알마는 뮤의 아들에게 외계인 얘기를 해줌으로써 유치원 원장으로부터 보모 제의를 받게 되었으나, 남편 조는 백혈병이 재발되어 내일을 알 수 없게 되던 중, 아내가 소년을 구하려다 차에 치어 혼수상태가 되자 자기 몸의 기를 넣어주고 결국 대신 죽는다. 이러한 우여곡절 끝에 야구를 못해 만사에 의욕상실이었던 데이빗 덕분에 외계인 구출에 결정적인 도움을 받은 벤은 외계로 돌아가려던 순간에 부모가 자식보다 오래 살면 안된다는 아내 메어리의 뜻에 따라 지구에 남기로 함으로써 감동적인 순간을 맞게 된다.

The second television adaptation of Once Upon a Mattress was broadcast on December 12, 1972, on CBS. This production, videotaped in color, included original Broadway cast members Burnett, Gilford and White, and also featured Bernadette Peters as Lady Larken, Ken Berry as Prince Dauntless, Ron Husmann as Harry, and Wally Cox as The Jester. It was directed by Ron Field and Dave Powers. Again, several songs were eliminated and characters were combined or altered. Since the parts of the Minstrel and the Wizard were cut from this adaptation, a new prologue was written with Burnett singing "Many Moons Ago" as a bedtime story.

The musical story of THE PRINCESS AND THE PEA, this television adaption of the 1959 Broadway hit was videotaped in black and white in front of a live audience and featured Burnett, Bova, Gilford, and White from the original Broadway cast, as well as new principals Bill Hayes as the Minstrel, Shani Wallis as Lady Larken and Elliott Gould (in his first appearance on any screen) as the Jester. Due to the reduced running time of 90 minutes, several songs and scenes were either cut or shortened. The conflict concerning Sir Harry and Lady Larkin was downplayed so that they were married in secret.

Each "tale" in the anthology was adapted from a single tale by the inimitable Sholom Aleichem, regarded by many as the "Yiddish Mark Twain". Included are: "A Tale of Chelm" starring Zero Mostel and Nancy Walker in the story of a bookseller attempting to buy a goat; "Bontche Schweig" about a poor man (Jack Gilford) whose recent arrival in Heaven makes the angels cry; and "The High School" about a Jewish merchant (Morris Carnovsky) persuaded by his wife (Gertrude Berg) to let their son attend a particular high school despite the enforcement of quotas for Jewish students.
