Every night, Soviet tractors comb the coast of Latvia looking for signs of anyone who could have infiltrated the Soviet border from the sea. One morning, three Soviet patrolmen discover a woman’s shoe in the sand and footsteps leading to the quaint little village of Liepaja.

Al Fountain, a middle-aged electrical engineer, is on the verge of a mid-life crisis, when he decides to take his time coming home from a business trip, rents a car, and heads out looking for a lake he remembers from his childhood. But his wandering takes him into the life of Kid, a free-spirited young man who helps Al escape from the routine of everyday life and find freedom to enjoy himself.

A sudden visit from a patient and his unstable, outrageously candid wife leads to a delirious night of shattering revelations for a husband and wife team of therapists.

J.J(J.J.: 마이클 보트만 분)는 경찰학교를 갓 졸업하고 에즈마서로 배속된다. 어느날 흑인에 의한 살인 강도가 발생하고 J.J와 그의 동료 보노(Bono: 돈 하비 분)가 우연히 잡은 흑인 테디 우즈(Teddy Woods: 아이스 큐브 분)가 총을 가지고 있었다는 이유만으로 살해혐의를 받고 법정에 서게 된다. 보노는 애초에 그가 흑인이라는 이유만으로 불신검문한 사실을 숨기고 교통위반으로 해달라고 J.J에게 협조를 요청하고 J.J는 이에 응한다. 그러나 재판이 진행되면서 J.J는 누군가가 자신의 보고서에 적힌 총기 일련번호를 바꾼 걸 알아내고, 이 사건은 음모이며 전에 일어났던 뺑소니운전 혐의자 어니 마샬의 자살사건 역시 조작이었다는 사실을 알게 된다. 모든 것은 서장인 매시(Massey: 리차드 앤더슨 분)와 베이커 경사(Baker: 마이클 아이론사이드 분)를 중심으로 한 경찰 내부의 조작. 동료경찰 데보라(Dep. Deborah Fields: 로리 페티 분)와 이 사건을 조사하던 J.J는 몇번의 죽을 고비를 넘기고 드디어 어니 마샬 사건의 진짜 범인은 시의원 리즈의 아들이었으며 경찰에서 이를 덮어두기 위한 작업이 진행 중이었으며, 주 상원의원의 미성년자 추행 혐의를 받고도 기소되지 않았음을 알아낸다. 초보 J.J가 진실을 캐내자 위협을 느낀 매시 서장은 보노로 하여금 테디 우드를 불신검문한 것이 불법이었음을 인정하게 하고 시민권 침해 혐의로 J.J가 기소되게 만든다. 그때서야 J.J는 자신이 지나치게 자신의 일에 집착한 나머지 잘못을 범했다는 것을 알고 후회하는데.
