대학 진학을 앞둔 데이나는 일에만 빠져있는 아빠와 둘이 살고 있다. 남부러울 것 없는 풍족한 생활이지만 아빠와의 관계는 소원하고, 데이나는 돌아가신 엄마의 유품과 낡은 다이어리 보는 것을 낙으로 삼는다. 서핑을 즐기고 자유로운 영혼을 가졌던 엄마에 대한 그리움은 커져가고, 데이나는 아빠에게 쪽지 한 장 만을 남긴 채 엄마의 추억이 담긴 남아프리카로 떠난다. 데이나는 더반에 도착하자마자 버스에서 흑인 서퍼인 푸시를 만나고 친구가 되어 함께 서핑을 즐긴다. 그러나 사물함에 넣어둔 가방에서 엄마의 유품을 도둑맞은 데이나. 결국 푸시를 따라 서퍼를 즐기는 젊은이들끼리 해변가에 모여 자급자족하는 ‘서핑 못하는 샐리’ 바에서 함께 생활하게 된다. 더반으로 오는 비행기에서 잠깐 만났던 매력적인 그랜트, 야생동물 보호센터에서 일하는 자상한 팀 등 새로운 친구들을 알게 되지만 최고의 서퍼 타라와는 사사건건 부딪힌다. 게다가 그들의 아지트는 무허가 불법건물로 곧 철거될 위기에 처해있다. 데이나는 푸시와 함께 엄마의 다이어리에 있는 추억의 흔적을 따라 여행을 시작하고 행복한 시간들을 보낸다. 그들의 아지트는 결국 철거되지만 데이나는 친구들과 함께 팀의 버스를 타고 엄마의 마지막 추억이 어린 곳인 제프리스만으로 향한다. 한편 데이나의 아빠도 데이나를 찾아 제프리스만으로 오는데...
