Yaasin, a policeman from Tangier who has almost become an alcoholic, spends most of his time in an exclusive brothel. Several characters arrive in the city at the same time: the millionaire Eric Burns; the German woman Eva Miller who, with her little daughter Gudrun, makes herself a living by doing frauds and small thefts; the smart gangster Rustum Wadi who is looking for a talisman that at that moment is in the hands of Andrews, a homosexual British collector. Yaasin is supposed to protect Burns, but when Andrew's corpse appears the case takes an unexpected turn.

어두운 파리, 세느 강변의 밤. 한 여인이 자동차를 몰고 나타난다. 카스테레오에선 우린 이별을 하기위해 왔다는 샹송이 흘러나온다. 누군가와 전화통화를 하던 그녀는 스카프를 흘리며 사라지고 그곳에 있던 알렉스는 그 스카프를 줍는다. 알렉스는 가장 친한 친구 또마와 자신의 애인인 플로랑스가 서로 연인 사이임을 알게되었고 그는 세느강가에서 또마를 죽이기 위해 목을 조른다. 하지만 결국 그는 차마 친구를 죽이진 못하고 집으로 돌아온다. 자신의 인생에서 중요했던 일을 기록하는 습관이 있는 알렉스는 이날 일을 '생애 최고의 살인 미수'라고 쓴다.

레흐 바웬사를 앞세운 자유 노조가 집권에 성공한 즈음, 폴란드 영화감독 예르지는 프랑스에서 TV 영화를 만든다. 명화들을 재현하는 이 영화는 예산을 초과하고, 영감마저 바닥난 듯 보이는 예르지는 지지부진하게 연출 작업을 한다. 한나는 영화 스태프들이 묵는 호텔 주인이다. 그녀는 공장을 운영하는 미셸과 함께 사는데, 미셀은 공장에서 일하던 이자벨을 해고한다. 한나와 이자벨은 예르지에게 끌리고, 호텔 메이드들은 영화 엑스트라가 되기 위해 일을 그만둔다.

The time is the 1930s and two Soviet spies (both Frenchmen by nationality) have been helping Communist factions during the Civil War in Spain. It is the time of Stalin's iron rule in the USSR, and the two agents are suddenly called to Moscow by the KGB. Knowing that they are in trouble for no fault of their own, fear drives one of them to suicide while the other gets his lover and her child and begins a run for his life, knowing that the KGB will never let him go free.
