내가 여자로 눈을 뜨기 시작한 열일곱 살의 어느 날, 엄마가 사라졌다. 아름답고 열정적이며 청소, 요리까지 완벽했던 엄마. 엄마는 아빠를 미워했고, ‘캣’이라 부르며 새끼고양이처럼 아끼던 내게 남자친구가 생기자 탐탁지 않아 했다. 놀랍게도 나는 한 순간 연기처럼 사라진 엄마에 대해 궁금하지도 슬프지도 않았다. 그러나 시간이 흐른 지금, 나는 엄마에 대한 기억과 부정하고 싶었던 진실을 마주하고 있다. 엄마는 왜, 어디로 사라져 버린 걸까?

Weaving together film, music and poetry, "Last of Our Kind" transforms the memory of a lost love into a ritualistic incantation of longing. Action is exaggerated and time seems to blur, as the lovers' tale unfolds poetically into a modern interpretation of the Persephone myth. Shot entirely on Super-8 - the movie traces the poem, line by line, throughout the city of Seattle in sequences of time-lapse photography blended with live-action that collapse and rearrange time and events into memories. Shot as a silent film, "Last of Our Kind" features an original soundtrack created by Robin Guthrie interwoven with a voiceover recitation of Rick Linville's poem.

스미스는 절친 스텔라와 늘 붙어 다니지만 클럽에서 새롭게 만난 런던과 데이트를 즐긴다. 평온했던 그의 일상이 그날 밤 이후 모든 것은 뒤죽박죽이 돼버린다. 파티에서 환각제가 섞인 과자를 먹은 스미스는 빨간 머리 소녀가 처참하게 살해당하는 모습을 목격하는데, 그러나 진실을 파헤치려고 한 걸음 나아갈수록 사건은 점점 더 미궁 속으로 빠져든다. 그는 과연 진실을 밝혀낼 수 있을 것인가!

어릴 적 기억의 일부를 잃은 ‘브라이언’은 기억을 되찾기 위해 계속 노력하지만 좀처럼 떠오르지 않는다. 갈수록 선명해지는 의문의 잔상들로 괴로워하던 브라이언은 당시 자신이 외계인들에게 납치당했고, 그 결과 기억상실증이 생겼다고 믿기 시작한다. 결국, 브라이언은 같은 야구팀 멤버였던 ‘닐’도 그날 그곳에 함께 있었다는 것을 기억해내고, 사라진 기억에 대한 키를 쥐고 있을지도 모르는 닐을 찾아 나서는데….
