쟈니는 성형 수술도 불가능한 추한 몰골 때문에 쟈니 핸섬이라는 풍자적인 이름으로 불리워지고, 친구인 마이키 외에는 상대해주는 사람도 없다. 그러나 머리가 비상한 그는 희귀 동전 가게를 털 계획을 세우고, 싸니와 라페가 동참한다. 하지만 동전을 턴 후 마이키는 싸니와 라페에게 살해당하고, 쟈니는 체포된다. 복역 중에도 두 사람의 청탁을 받은 범법자에 의해 부상당한 쟈니는 범죄 심리를 연구하는 레셔 박사의 연구 대상이 된다. 그는 쟈니가 외모에서 오는 소외감과 유관하다고 생각, 쟈니에게 최첨단 의료 기술을 동원하여 성형 수술을 해 준다. 새롭게 변신한 쟈니는 이름도 바꾸고, 취업증까지 받아 가석방 된다. 미남이 된 쟈니는 조선소 용접공으로 일하면서 경리과 다나와 사랑에 빠진다. 그러나 쟈니는 마이키를 죽인 싸니와 라페에게 복수하기 위한 범죄 계획을 세운다. 그는 현금 강탈에 성공하고 두 사람의 복수극을 시작한다.

명 촬영기사 멘지스의 감독 데뷰작으로, 남아공화국의 인종차별 문제를 다루었다. 반정부 활동으로 감옥에 간 엄마를 둔 10대 소녀의 눈을 통해, 인종차별에 대한 고발과 사회 운동으로 가족을 소홀히 한 경우에 자녀들이 겪는 정신적 고통이라는 양면을 추구한 작품으로, 실화를 소재로 했다. 특히 딸 역의 메이가 호연으로 일약 주목을 받았다.
