병약한 남편과 친정 부모님을 모시고 아직 어린 아홉명의 아이들을 기르며 시골에서 농사를 짓고 있는 마르셀라는 늘 병약하던 남편이 죽자 혼자서 농사를 지을 수도 없는 처지가 되어 얼마 안되는 농토를 팔아 도회지로 나가 조그만 가게라도 하나 얻어서 아이들과 함께 생활을 꾸려나아갈 계획을 세운다. 다들 아홉명이나 되는 어린애 얘기만 나오면 고개를 설레설레 흔들며 집을 내 줄 사람이 없기 때문이었다. 할 수 없이 마르셀라는 자기는 아이는 하나도 없는 과부라고 거짓말을 하고 돈많고 콧대높은 마리아의 아파트 꼭대기층을 세를 얻는데 성공하고 애들과 함께 몰래 입주한다. 자기가 살던 시골에서 갓 올라온 농산물을 파는 가게는 그런대로 잘 돼가나 아이들이 다른 사람 눈에 띄지 않게 하는 것이 어려운 일이었다. 그러나 5개월 후 어느 공휴일 아침 우연히 아이들의 모습이 집주인 마리아의 눈에 그만 들켜버리자 마르셀라는 정중하게 사과하며 새 집을 구하는 대로 집을 비우겠노라고 약속을 한다. 그런 후에도 마르셀라와 아이들은 전과 다름없이 다른 사람들에게 폐를 끼치지 않기 위해 일찍 나가고 늦게 들어오는 생활을 계속한다. 그 모습을 지켜본 집주인 마리아 내외는 일곱살 때 죽은 자기들의 아들 생각에 몹시 괴로와한다. 마침내 마리아는 마음을 돌려 마르셀라에게 애들을 잘 키우라며 더이상 아이들에 대해 문제삼지 않을 것임을 말해준다.

If in secret, they admired and liked each other, politics still divided them as it is dividing the country. And when the mayor wants his "People's House"; the priest wants his "Garden City" for the poor. Division exist between the richest and the poorest, the pious and the atheists and even between lovers. But if the people are hard as the country, they are good in the bottom of there heart.
