In 1865, a troop of Confederate soldiers led by Major Matt Stewart attack the wagon of gold escorted by Union cavalry and the soldiers are killed. The only wounded survivor tells that the war ended one month ago, and the group decides to take the gold and meet their liaison that knew that the war ended but did not inform the troop. The harsh Rolph Bainter kills the greedy man and the soldiers flee in his wagon driven by Major Stewart. When they meet a posse chasing them, Stewart gives wrong information to misguide the group; however, they have an accident with the wagon and lose the horses. They decide to stop a stagecoach and force the driver to transport them, but the posse returns and they are trapped in the station with the passenger. They realize that the men are not deputies and have no intention to bring them to justice but take the stolen gold.

미국 기병대의 대령인 커비 요크(존 웨인 분)는 부인(모린 오하라 분)과 15년이나 떨어져 지내고 있다. 물론 이들 사이에는 갓 청년이 된 아들 제프(클로드 자맨 2세)가 있다. 미육군 사관학교에 다니다 수학에서 낙제를 하여 퇴학당한 제프는 신병으로 입대를 자원하게 되는데 배치받은 곳이 바로 아버지 커비가 근무하는 곳이었다. 이것이 이들 부자에게는 15년만의 만남이었다. 아들이 훌륭한 군인으로 성장하길 바라지만 겉으로는 냉랭한 태도로 일관하는 아버지 앞에 요크 부인이 나타나 아들을 군에서 빼내고 고향으로 돌려보내라고 요청한다. 그러나 아버지는 물론 자신의 소신대로 살아가려는 제프 스스로가 이를 거절한다. 이러한 가족의 갈등 속에서도 인디언과의 싸움은 계속되고 어린이들이 인디언의 포로가 되어 교회에 갇히게 되는 사태가 벌어진다. 결국 치열한 전투 속에서 커비는 인디언의 화살에 맞게 되지만 아들 제프의 도움으로 살아나고 전투도 승리로 이끌게 되어 이들 가족에게는 사랑과 행복이 다시 피어난다.

Late in the Civil War, three Confederate soldiers escape from a Union prison camp in Missouri. They soon fall into the hands of pro-Confederate raiders, who force them to act as "outriders" (escorts) for a civilian wagon train that will be secretly transporting Union gold from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to St. Louis, Missouri. The three men are to lead the wagons into a raider trap in Missouri, but one of them starts to have misgivings....

Rural Mississippi in the 1940s: Lucas Beauchamp, a local black man with a reputation of not kowtowing to whites, is found standing over the body of a dead white man, holding a pistol that has recently been fired. Quickly arrested for murder and jailed, Beauchamp insists he's innocent and asks the town's most prominent lawyer, Gavin Stevens, to defend him, but Stevens refuses. When a local boy whom Beauchamp has helped in the past and who believes him to be innocent hears talk of a mob taking Beauchamp out of jail and lynching him, he pleads with Stevens to defend Beauchamp at trial and prove his innocence.

Rancher Clay and his brother, Steve, head out across the Sonora mountain pass, followed by Lednov, an ex-con seeking revenge on Clay for putting him behind bars. Clay and Steve unexpectedly cross paths with a group of dance hall girls -- including Mary, Marcia and Helen -- whose stagecoach has broken down, and help them get to the nearest ranch, where Lednov unfortunately catches up to Clay.

After his plane is downed in the South Pacific, a Navy flier recounts his life to a co-pilot while awaiting rescue.

남북전쟁이 끝나고 고향으로 돌아가기 위해 조지아 호를 건너던 페니는 호수 깊은 곳 황무지를 개간하고 그곳에 가정을 꾸린다. 세월은 흐르고 페니에겐 동물을 사랑하는 12살 된 아들 조디와 어린 세 아이를 잃은 후 마음의 문을 닫고 사는 아내가 있다. 한편, 페니에게 속아 자신의 총을 쓸모 없는 개와 바꾼 일로 화가 난 포레스터 형제들은 페니의 돼지들을 훔쳐간다. 돼지를 찾으러 가던 중 페니는 독사에 물리고 사슴을 죽여 심장을 꺼내 물린 부위를 막는다. 페니는 가까스로 살아나고 죽은 사슴에게 새끼가 있는 걸 본 조디는 아기 사슴을 기르겠다고 조른다.
