A Senegalese platoon of soldiers from the French Free Army are returned from combat in France and held for a temporary time in a military encampment with barbed wire fences and guard towers in the desert. Among their numbers are Sergeant Diatta, the charismatic leader of the troop who was educated in Paris and has a French wife and child, and Pays, a Senegalese soldier left in a state of shock from the war and concentration camps and who can only speak in guttural screams and grunts.

페트릭 쥬베(Patrick Juvet)가 음악을 맡아, 80년대 초부터 인기를 모았던 그의 연주곡 "슬픈 로라"가 주제곡으로 사용으로 사용되었다. 주인공인 로라(돈 던랩)는 발레를 전공하는 학생으로 어머니 사라(머드 아담스)와 함께 살고 있다. 어느 날 발레학원에서 그녀의 어머니 사라의 옛 연인이자 당대의 유명한 조각가인 폴(제임스 미첼)을 만나게 되고 그 이후부터 로라는 폴을 사모하게 된다. 한편 폴은 근간에 와서 무력해진 자기 자신에 대해 회의를 품고 있던 중 로라를 본 순간 그녀의 순수한 모습에 이끌려 그녀를 모델로 조각상을 만들 결심을 하고 사라에게 부탁하지만 사라는 이를 거절한다. 하지만 폴의 간곡한 부탁에 못 이겨 로라의 사진만 폴에게 전해준다. 로라의 사진을 가지고 로라의 조각상을 만드는 폴, 날이 갈수록 폴에 대한 애틋한 사랑으로 모든 의욕을 잃고 번민의 나날을 보내는 로라. 우연한 화재로 인해 폴은 일시적으로 실명을 하게 된다. 그로인해 로라의 조각상 제작은 중단이 되고 폴을 사랑하는 로라는 그의 재기를 위해 그녀가 직접 모델이 될 것을 결심한다. 폴은 손의 촉감에 의지해 로라의 모습을 조각으로 옮겨 마침내 로의의 조각상을 완성하나 폴은 조각상을 완성하는 순간 살아있는 육체와 예술의 육체사이에 갈등을 느낀다. 그날 밤 로라는 처음으로 남성을 경험하게 되고...
