미래, 인간이 기계의 통제를 받는 상황 속에서 자원의 고갈과 인구 폭증으로 한 아이만 낳아야 되는 새로운 법이 제정된다. 여자의 임신은 철저히 금지되고 임산부는 따로 격리 수용된다. 새로 태어난 생명을 기계 인간으로 만들기 위해서이다. 존 브레닉(John Brennick : 크리스토퍼 램버트 분)은 전직 특공대 대령으로, 아내(Karen Brennick : 로린 로클린 분)가 2번째 아이를 갖자, 인간으로 키우기 위해 다른 별로 탈출을 시도하지만 검문에 걸려 죽음의 수용소 '포트리스'에 수감된다. 그곳은 사막 한가운데의 지하 요새로서 철저히 통제되고 감시되어 탈출은 불가능하다. 더욱이 수감시 몸안에 폭탄을 장치해서 통제에 따르지 않으면 죽음을 부를 뿐이다. 그곳에 수용되어 있던 사형수와 죽음의 사투를 벌여서 간신히 살아 남은 그는 다른 죄수로부터 아내가 수감되어 있는 감옥의 위치를 듣게 된다. 아내 또한 그가 살아 있다는 것을 알게되고 서로 탈출할 방법만을 연구한다. 수용 소장이 브레닉의 아내에게 반하여 그의 목숨을 빌미로 그녀의 사랑을 구하고 남편을 살리기 위하여 그 제안을 받아들인다. 통제부에 기거하게 된 그녀는 탈출할 수 있는 방법을 찾기가 용이해졌고 브레닉과 연락을 취한다. 마침내 브레닉은 계획을 실행에 옮기고 천신만고 끝에 아내와 함께 탈출에 성공한다.
