1634년 북미 예수회의 선교사인 라포그 신부(Laforgue: 로데어 브루튜 분)는 인디언들과 함께 강 상류에 있는 휴런까지 가기 위해 여행길에 오른다. 인디언들은 라포그가 항상 검은 사제복을 입고 있기 때문에 그를 블랙로브라 부른다. 험한 여행길을 가는 도중 블랙로브를 악마라고 믿는 무리들로 인해 온갖 고난을 겪게 되고, 잔인한 이로쿠아족들의 습격과 질병등도 그들의 어려움을 가중시킨다. 온갖 고초끝에 가까스로 휴런에 이르나 그곳에 또 다시 질병이 휩쓸고 가고 결국 마지막으로 남아있던 신부까지 죽음을 맞이한다. 그러나 그의 숭고한 정신이 인디언 마을에 전달되고 휴런 마을의 인디언들은 모두 세례를 받기로 한다.
