Cameramen and women discuss the craft and art of cinematography and of the "DP" (the director of photography), illustrating their points with clips from 100 films, from Birth of a Nation to Do the Right Thing. Themes: the DP tells people where to look; changes in movies (the arrival of sound, color, and wide screens) required creative responses from DPs; and, these artisans constantly invent new equipment and try new things, with wonderful results. The narration takes us through the identifiable studio styles of the 30s, the emergence of noir, the New York look, and the impact of Europeans. Citizen Kane, The Conformist, and Gordon Willis get special attention.

라일(Lyle Rogers: 워렌 비티 분)과 척(Chuck Clarke: 더스틴 호프만 분)은 별로 신통치 않은 뮤지션이다. 그들은 메니저인 후리드의 도움으로 일자리를 얻어 모로코로 가게 된다. 가는 도중 경유지인 이쉬탈 공항에서 남장한 여인 쉬라(Shirra Assel: 이사벨 아자니 분)와 만나 여권과 가방이 뒤바뀐다. 그때부터 라일과 척은 엄청난 오해 속에서 CIA와 KGB로부터 쫓기는 신세가 되고 만다. 알고보니 쉬라는 이쉬탈 왕족의 지령을 받은 극렬 좌파 요원이었는데.
