70년대 이라는 TV 시트콤을 통해 미국인들의 사랑을 한 몸에 받았던 아역 스타 디키 로버츠! 갑자기 들이닥친 시청률 급락에 쇼는 종영되고, 디키를 아역 스타로 키워냈던 어머니는 그를 떠나고 만다. 모든 사람들의 머리 속에서 잊혀진 채 35세의 성인이 된 디키는 더 이상 귀여운 아역 스타가 아니다. 대리 주차를 주업으로 하는 그는 복싱 경기, 성형수술 등 왕년의 인기를 되찾기 위해 무엇이든 할 준비가 되어있다. 자신이 다시 스타가 되면 엄마가 다시 돌아올 것이라 믿고 있기 때문이다. 어느 날, 지인의 소개로 명감독 러브 라이너(해리가 샐리를 만났을 때)의 작품에 지원한 디키. 그러나 그는 '일찌감치 유명인이 된 탓에 평범한 어린시절 정서를 경험하지 못했다'며 캐스팅에 난색을 표하는 로브 라이너의 충고를 듣는다. 디키는 잃어버린 자신의 어린 시절을 되살리고자 마음먹고, 조지의 가족과 계약, 지극히 평범한 가족의 일원으로 재기를 위한 새로운 삶을 시작한다. 디키는 아빠 조지와 엄마 그레이스, 아직 어린 샘과 샐리의 가족이 된다. 평범하게 살아보지 못해 말썽만 일으키는 디키, 그에게 거부감을 느끼던 조지 가족은 디키의 진실함에 점점 마음을 열며 친숙해져 간다. 따뜻한 엄마 그레이스는 디키의 어린시절을 만들어주기 위해 애쓰게 되고 디키는 샘을 괴롭히는 얼간이 삼총사를 혼내주는 것을 계기로 샘과 샐리의 친구가 된다. 서서히 가족의 일원이 되어가는 디키는 아이들과 어울리면서 유년시절 겪어보지 못한 새로운 경험에 열중한다. 그 무렵, 디키의 매니저인 시드니는 병원에 입원한 로브 라이너 감독에게 자신의 신장을 기증키로 하고 디키의 오디션을 따내게 되는데... 디키는 과연 그의 꿈을 이룰 수 있을까?
