1942년 6월 북아프리카 전선. 토브루크를 발판으로 삼아 독일군과 싸우던 연합군이 크게 패하여 전면 퇴각한다. 멀리 앨 알라메인으로 철수하라는 명령이다. 독일군과의 전투에서 간신히 목숨을 건진 미전차부대의 건 상사와 웨이코, 지미 세 사람은 룰러벨이라는 애칭의 탱크를 몰고 남쪽으로 향한다. 사하라 사막을 가로질러 가야만 하는 이들은 도중에 영국군의 핼러데이 대위와 베이츠, 마이크, 케이시, 윌리엄즈, 그리고 프랑스군 프렌치 등을 만나 같이 사막을 건너기로 한다. 물이 떨어지자 탬불이라는 영국군 예하의 수단군 상사를 만나 합류하는데, 다행히 그는 사막의 지리에 밝았다. 첫 번째 찾아간 우물은 말라있었다. 비어 아크로마라는 폐허의 우물에 기대를 걸고 찾아간다. 탬불 상사가 잡아온 이탈리아 군 포로가 거추장스럽지만 같이 데리고 간다. 이 무렵 공격해 온 독일 전투기를 격추, 조종사를 생포하여 식구는 하나 더 늘었다. 사막이 모래바람과 싸우며 간신히 찾아간 비어 아크로마의 우물. 하지만, 물은 우물 벽으로 겨우 한방울씩 스며 나온다. 마실만큼 물을 얻으면 떠날 셈이었지만, 수통 9개 반만에 물이 끊어지고 때마침 들이닥친 독일군 정찰대. 전투끝에 모두 사살하고 2명을 생포한다. 물을 구하러 왔던 이들의 부대는 500명의 대대병력으로 엘 알라메인에 집결하는 연합군의 측면을 공격할 계획으로 사막을 가로지르고 있었다. 곤경에 처한 폰팔켄 소령의 독일 대대는 어떻게든지 건 상사 일행을 처치하고 우물을 점령해야만 한다. 건 상사 일행은 독일군의 계획을 알고 이들을 막기로 한다. 수적으로는 도저히 상대가 안되지만 행군을 방해해서 시간을 벌어야 연합군이 무사할 수가 있기 때문이다. 그러려면 말라버린 우물에 물이 많은 것처럼 보여서 독일군의 공격을 유도하는 길밖에 없다. 폐허가 된 건물과 담을 의지해서 건 상사 일행은 독일군 대대와 승산이 없는 전투를 계속한다.
