학문이 남성들만의 전유물이었던 시절, 1904년 동유럽의 어느 조그만 마을. 지식욕이 강했던 엔틀은 랍비인 아버지로부터 몰래 탈무드를 공부하면서, 그나마 자신의 배움에 대한 욕구를 채워간다. 그러던 어느 날 아버지의 죽음을 맞은 엔틀은 평범한 여성으로서의 삶을 거부하고 자기 자신을 찾아 먼 여행을 시작하게 되고. 배움의 기회를 얻기 위해 남장을 하고 길을 나선 그녀는 우연히 아빅도어 일행을 만나 그가 다니는 학교에 입학하게 된다. 안쉘이라는 새로운 이름으로 살아가며 자유롭게 책을 읽고 탈무드를 얘기하면서 엔틀은 그 동안 느껴보지 못했던 기쁨의 순간을 누리게 되고, 늘 함께 웃고 공부를 하던 아빅 도어에게서 우정 이상의 감정을 느끼기도 한다. 한편, 약혼녀 하다스와의 결혼이 깨진 아빅도어는 깊은 상심에 빠진다. 그를 위해 위로하던 엔틀은 아빅도어에게서 하다스와 결혼해 달라는 부탁을 받게 되고, 어쩔 수 없는 상황에 몰려 엔틀은 하다스와의 결혼식을 올리게 된다. 하지만 자신의 비밀을 숨길 수 없는 어려움이 계속되고, 더 이상 자기 자신과 모든 사람을 속일 수 없다고 생각한 엔틀은 모든 사실을 털어놓을 결심을 하게 된다. 루블린으로의 여행길에 엔틀은 자신은 안쉘이 아니며 여자였다는 엄청난 비밀을 아빅도어에게 얘기하게 된다. 있을 수 없는 일이라며 화를 내는 아빅도어에게 엔틀은 그녀의 속마음을 털어놓는다. 그를 지켜주고 싶었고 사랑했기 때문이라는 그녀의 말에 그는 괴로워하며, 지금까지 안쉘에게 느꼈던 자신도 이해하지 못했던 그 동안의 감정을 얘기한다. 하지만 자신과 아빅도어가 어울리지 않는다는 것을 깨달은 엔틀은 하다스에 대한 아빅도어의 사랑과 두 사람의 아름다운 모습을 지켜주기로 결심한다. 그리고 자기 자신이 진정 원하는 길을 향해 또다시 먼 여행을 시작한다. 예전보다 훨씬 더 성숙된 모습으로 그리고 더욱 강한 믿음을 갖고 자기 자신을 찾아 자유롭게 새로운 인생을 향해 길을 떠난다.

세 여인이 한 남자를 사랑한다. 교양있고 아름다운 그의 부인 키티(Kitty Baldry: 줄리 크리스티 분), 사촌지간인 제니(Jenny Baldry: 앤-마가렛 분), 그리고 젊은 날 사랑했던 마가렛(Margaret Grey: 글렌다 잭슨 분). 크리스 대위(Chris Baldry: 알란 베이츠 분)는 끔찍한 전쟁터에서 멀쩡히 살아 돌아오지만 지난 15년간의 모든 기억은 제로인 상태가 된다. 병원에 있다는 소식을 받고는 키티와 제니가 달려가지만 그는 부인을 전혀 알아보지 못하고 그의 사촌인 제니만을 알아본다. 제니가 그에게 그의 부인 키티를 상기시키려 하지만 오히려 그는 젊은 날의 애인 마가렛만을 찾는다. 이에 키티는 크게 상심하지만 그의 기억을 되찾게 해주려고 노력을 한다. 그러나 그러한 그녀의 노력에는 아랑곳없이 그의 사촌 제니에게 마가렛을 만나게 해달라고 부탁을 한다. 한편 제니도 마음속 깊이 그를 사랑하는 마음을 간직한 채 연민의 정으로 바라본다. 그리고 크리스가 마가렛을 만나도록 도와 준다. 크리스는 이제는 초라한 중녀의 여인이 되어 남의 아내가 되었지만 그녀에게 사랑을 느낀다. 또한 마가렛도 크리스에 대해 연민의 정을 느끼고 그의 기억을 되살려 주려고 노력한다. 비록 15년간의 기억은 상실되었지만 그 어느때보다도 행복한 모습으로 그의 생을 즐기는데... 제1차 세계대전을 겪으면서 지난 20여년간의 기억을 상실한 남자와 그를 둘러싼 세 여인(부인 사촌 여동생 젊은 날의 애인) 간의 미묘한 사랑의 심리를 다룬 영화. 잔잔한 영상 속에서 전개되는 심리 묘사와 섬세하게 그려지는 사랑의 여러 유형이 볼 만하고 출연 배우들의 연기가 뛰어나다.

An aged art connoisseur (Beaumont) and his young female neighbour (Coles), who has a job posing naked in a club, meet and exist in fantasy and reality. Although this raises certain much-discussed questions about the nature of representation, and about the construction of narrative and daydreams in films, 'Phoelix' tends to treat these as just pretty and pertinent issues, opting instead for a mannered concentration on detail.

Arnold Cowan is not a religious man. He does not believe in any of that nonsense.
