커커시리는 해발 4,700미터에 달하는 중국내 마지막 원시 평원으로 자연 그대로의 모습이 보존되어 있는 티벳 천혜의 고원이다. 1985년부터 이곳에 서식하는 야생 티벳 영양들을 밀렵해 모피를 밀수하는 밀렵꾼들이 활개를 치자 지원군으로 구성된 산악 순찰대가 결성돼 불법 밀렵꾼을 추적하기 시작한다. 산악순찰대의 고군분투하는 모습들이 언론을 통해 보도되자 한 신문사 기자는 산악순찰대 내부로 들어가 생생한 순찰대 장면을 취재해 오기로 한다. 황량한 평원 속에서 영양들을 밀렵하며 모피를 벗겨 삶을 이어가는 밀렵꾼들의 모습과 이를 뒤쫓는 고독한 순찰대들과의 쫓고 쫓기는 추격전을 함께 경험한 기자는 이들 산악 순찰대의 처절한 삶을 직접 느낀다. 광활한 티벳 고원을 배경으로 밀렵꾼을 쫓는 산악 경비대는 멋있는 영웅이 아니라, 신념을 위해 생업까지 포기하고 어려운 길을 택하는 외로운 사람들이었다.
