빌 라고(Bill Rago: 대니 드비토 분)는 좋은 집안 출신에 프린스턴 대학을 나와 광고업에 종사하는 부러울 것이 없는 사람이다. 그러나 그는 세상에 태어나 가치있는 일을 해본 적도 없고 해볼 엄두도 내지 못하는 위인이다. 또한 가정적으로도 안정을 찾지 못했으며, 냉소적인 태도로 수차례 직장 상사들과 충돌하게 되고 이로 인해 실업자로 전락하게 된다. 궁여지책으로 찾아간 직업소개소에서는 그에게 전혀 어울리지 않는 직업인 육군사관학교의 영어 교관직을 알선해 준다. 군대식 사고방식에 빠져 있는 교관들과 자대배치를 앞두고 기본적인 소양만을 갖추기 위해 모여든 상이한 배경을 지닌 다양한 인종의 젊은이들 속에서 이런저런 사건들을 겪으면서 빌은 차츰 그가 맡은 젊은이들의 재능을 키워나가는데서 삶의 기쁨을 찾아 나가게 된다. 군대에서의 낙제생들인 이들 또한 빌의 열성적인 태도에 동화되어 가면서 단체정신을 키워나가게 되고 자신감을 갖게 된다. 빌은 그런 그들에게 세익스피어의 연극공연을 직접 관람할 수 있는 기회를 주고자 규율을 어기고 이들을 훈련소 밖으로 이끌고 나간다. 드디어 이들의 기본교육이 끝나는 날이 다가오고 빌은 전원을 무시험으로 통과시키라는 상부의 지시를 받게 된다. 이에 응하지 않고 시험을 강행하려는 빌에 맞서 빌과 사사건건 충돌해 온 카스 상사(Sergeant Cass: 그레고리 하인즈 분)는 시험전날 밤 빌의 학생들에게 혹독한 야간훈련을 시킴으로써 시험에 응할 수 없도록 방해까지 한다. 텅빈 교실에서 초조하게 학생들을 기다리는 빌. 그 앞에 처음과는 달리 절도있고 자신감에 넘치는 모습으로 나타난 학생들. 그들은 모두 빌의 시험에 통과하게 되고, 빌은 드디어 자신의 삶의 의미를 찾게되고 전혀 어울리지 않을것같던 영어 교관직을 계속 맡게 된다.

이 영화는 고등학생에 대한 이야기이지만 가벼운 로맨스나 호러, 액션 소재의 킬링 타임용이 아니다. 어른 혹은 사회를 향해 무분별한 총기 소지에 대해 직간접적인 질문을 던지는 사회 비판 영화이다. 나아지지 않는 흑인의 삶, 가난을 대물림 받은 어린 학생들이 범죄에 손대고 한탕주의에 젖어 무분별한 총 난사를 하는 것이 과연 젊은이들만의 잘못이며 책임인가 되짚어 보지 않을 수가 없다. Ernest R.
