이 작품은 막시 밀리아노 1세가 지배하고 있는 1867년 혼란한 정국의 멕시코가 배경이다. 합스부르크 왕가 프란츠 요제프 1세의 동생으로 오스트리아의 왕위 계승을 포기하고 멕시코 황제가 된 빈 출신의 막시 밀리아노 1세는 남북 전쟁을 끝낸 미국의 압력으로 나폴레옹 3세의 프랑스 군대가 철수하고 세력이 약화된 상태에서 혁명군과의 마지막 일전을 앞두고 있던 시기이기도 하다. 그러던 중 막시 밀리아노 1세는 결국에 혁명군에게 잡혀 총살로 비극적인 삶을 마감한다. 그 뜨거운 혁명의 물결 속에 보수파와 혁명군의 극심한 대립 속에 보수파의 오스트리아 군은 군자금으로 쓰일 황금을 수송할 계획을 세운다. 이 사실을 알게 된 혁명군 지도자 세뇰 오카노는 그 황금 마차를 강탈하기 위해 빈틈없는 명사수 무법자 사바타를 용병으로 고용한다. 항상 검은 옷을 입고 라이플의 탄창 마자막 칸에 담배를 넣고 다니는 사바타, 그의 동료들인 에스쿠도와 발렌타인을 이끌고 손 쉽게 황금마차를 강탈에 성공하지만 황금대신에 모래로 가득 찬 것을 발견하게 된다. 오스트리아 군의 탐욕으로 가득찬 스키멜 대령의 황금을 빼돌리기 위한 속임수임을 알아낸 사바타는 그의 동료들과 스키멜 대령을 쫒게 되는데...

1844년 연합군에 항복한 이탈리아의 북부 지역을 점령한 나찌 독일에 의해 레지스탕스에게 협조 하였다는 이유로 마을 전체 주민이 몰살을 당한다. 이를 산에서 숨어 지켜보던 아이들의 눈에는 오로지 독일군에 대한 강한 증오만이 타오를 뿐이다. 한편 미군 측에서는 군사적인 목적으로 이 마을의 댐을 폭파하기 위해 특공대를 침투시키지만 착륙 즉시 몰살을 당하고 만다. 겨우 나뭇가지에 걸려 목숨을 보존한 한명이 이들 어린 전쟁고아들에게 구조가 되지만 부상으로 의식을 회복하지 못하고 죽어 가는 중이었다. 결국 아이들은 독일 점령이의 여의사를 꾀어 납치하여 미군 병사에게 끌고 와 치료를 강요한다. 협박에 못 이겨 치료를 하여 회복을 시키지만 아이들의 눈에 그 미군은 자신들의 적인 독일군들과 싸울 수 있는 방법을 가르쳐 줄 수 있는 유일한 도구일 뿐이다

"Under Ten Flags" is a WWII movie loosely based on the true story of the German navy commerce raider Atlantis, a converted Auxilliary Cruiser, and her Captain Bernhard Rogge. Atlantis, camouflaged as a merchant ship, cruised the South Seas ( Atlantic, Indian & Pacific) and sank or captured 22 merchant ships from May 1940 through November 22, 1941 when she was sunk by the British Cruiser HMS Devonshire. Rogge was one of the few German officers of flag rank who were not arrested by the Allies after the war ended. This was due to the very proper and ethical way he exercised his command of Atlantis. After the war he advanced to Rear Admiral in the West German Navy and became a high-ranking NATO commander.
