In the spring of 1945, World War II is coming to a close. 인도의 정글을 개간하여 마을을 건설하던 현장에서 감독관 라에의 아내 마수아는 요람에서 놀던 아들 나투가 사라진 것을 발견한다. 아들을 찾던 라에는 호랑이에게 물려 죽고 아이는 결국 찾지 못하는데 정글에서 길을 잃은 아이는 늑대굴로 걸어들어가 늑대 새끼들과 함께 자라나면서 모글리란 이름을 얻는다. 12년 후, 호시탐탐 아이를 노리는 못된 호랑이 쉬어 칸에게 쫓기다 우연히 마을로 들어와 사람들을 보게 되는 모글리는 친어머니인 마수아를 만나지만 서로 알아보지 못하고 양아들이 되어 인간의 문명을 배운다. 그러나 모글리의 출현을 탐탁지 않게 여기던 사냥꾼 발데오에게 칼을 산 모글리는 쉬어 칸을 죽이기 위해 정글로 돌아가려고 하는데. 발데오의 딸 마하라는 모글리를 따라 정글로 구경을 갔다가 멸망한 옛 왕궁의 보물창고를 찾아나섰다가 실패하자 분풀이로 마을에 돌아온 모글리가 마귀라며 마을 사람들을 선동하여 아이를 화형시키려 한다. 그러나 보물에 대한 미련을 버리지 못한 이들은 모글리가 살아 있어야 보물창고를 찾을 수 있다고 생각해 마수아가 모글리를 놓아주는 걸 일부로 방치하고는 마수아를 잡아 가두고 다시 정글로 들어가 보물창고를 찾아낸다. 하지만 물욕에 눈먼 이들은 커다란 루비를 가지고 다투다 서로 죽이고 발데오 혼자 빈손으로 마을로 돌아온다. 보물을 모두 잃고 화가 난 발데오는 정글에 불을 지르고 불은 마을까지 번져 삶들은 모든 걸 잃고 도망친다. 코끼리를 타고 불 속에서 어머니 마수아를 구한 모글리는 마수아의 애원을 뒤로하고 동물들과 함께 다시 정글로 돌아간다.

Edna marries Texan Sam Gladney, operator of a wheat mill. They have a son, who is killed when very young. Edna discovers by chance how the law treats children who are without parents and decides to do something about it. She opens a home for foundlings and orphans and begins to place children in good homes, despite the opposition of "conservative" citizens, who would condemn illegitimate children for being born out of wedlock. Eventually Edna leads a fight in the Texas legislature to remove the stigma of illegitimacy from birth records in that state, while continuing to be an advocate for homeless children.

Young Matt Matthews, an Ozark Mountains moonshiner, hates the father he has never seen, who apparently deserted Matt's mother and left her to die. His obsession contributes to the hatred rampant in the mountains. However, the arrival of a stranger, Daniel Howitt, begins to positively affect the mountain people, who learn to shed their hatred under his gentle influence.

Dusty falls for nurse April Logan, who is also loved by Mountie Jim Brett. April's brother is involved with Courbeau's daughter Louvette, which leads to trouble during the battles between the rebels and the Mounties. Through it all Dusty is determined to bring Corbeau back to Texas (and April, too, if he can manage it.)

Reporter Nicholas Ranson is jubilant when, on 17 Dec 1903, in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Orville and Wilbur Wright take their first airplane flight. Back home in Underwood, Maryland, however, his uncle Hiram F. Jenkins, owner and editor of the local newspaper, refuses to print the story. Nicholas quits and continues to work on his own airplane, with the devoted help of his little daughter Peggy. Peggy is actually the first in her family to fly when her friends, Patrick Falconer and Scott Barnes, induce her to get inside a large kite they have made, and run with it in a field until she is airborne. The kite is caught in a tree, however, and Peggy gets a black eye. Later, Nicholas dies when his experimental airplane crashes, leaving his wife and children alone. By Peggy's adulthood, planes are capable of flying at an altitude of 11,000 feet, and speeds of nearly 100 m.p.h. Peggy continues her father's obsession with flight by helping Scott and Pat to build a plane.
