This film is of interest primarily because it contains within it the entire surviving footage of an unfinished 1974 film by the same director, Slave of Love, which was successfully remade shortly thereafter by another director, Nikita Mikhalkov.The "cover" story is about a woman (Jeanne Moreau) newly released from prison camps in the 1940s back into Russian society, who finds that there is no place for her in the world she has come back to. However, this painterly film is so filled with striking and surreal imagery that it would be misleading to say that the story is of any great importance in relation to that.

쉴리코프는 돈을 벌기에 급급한 러시안 택시운전수이고 리오차는 알콜중독에 빠진 유태인 섹스폰 연주자이다. 쉴리코프는 택시요금을 안내고 도망갔던 리오차를 붙잡아 자기밑에 두고 일을 시킨다. 리오차는 쉴리코프가 시키는데로 일하며 용돈을 얻어 술을 마시면서 그와 동거에 들어간다. 가치관이 판이하게 다른 이 두남자는 서로를 비난하면서도 색다른 우정을 쌓아간다. 거의 폐인이었던 리오차는 다시 음악을 하게 되고, 차츰 유명해지면서 쉴리코프와는 멀어진다. 마침내 리오차는 미국까지 가서 연주활동을 하게 되고, 리오차를 이젠 TV화면을 통해서 볼 수 밖에 없는 쉴리코프는 깊은 외로움에 바진다. 어느날 리오차가 쉴리코프를 다시 찾아오고, 그 둘은 서로가 다르면서도 떨어져서는 살 수 없다는 것을 알게 된다. 결국 둘은 서로를 이해하기 보다는 어느 한쪽을 죽이는 것이 쉽다는 것을 깨닫는다.

모로(Moro: 빅토르 최 분)는 휘청거리며 요양소에서 나온다. 마약투여로 일정 기간 치료를 받고 나온 것. 친구들에게 연락해보지만 아무도 반기지 않는다. 친구 스파르탁(Spartak: 알렉산드 바쉬로프 분)은 모로를 보자 몸을 숨기고 여자 친구였던 지나(Dina: 마리나 스미노바 분) 역시 냉담하기만 하다. 모로는 지나의 집에서 묵게 되고 그녀가 아직 마약에서 벗어나지 못했음을 안다. 아직 지나를 사랑하는 모로는 지나가 마약에서 손을 끊도록 하려고 노력하지만 번번이 허사가 되고 만다. 지나와 함께 먼 여행길을 떠난 모로는 조금이나마 안락한 기분에 젖는다. 어느 날 지나가 말없이 사라지고 며칠 뒤 다시 돌아온 그녀의 손엔 마약이 쥐어져 있다. 마약을 판매하는 조직과 사이가 어긋난 모로는 정면대결을 벌이게 되고 치열한 접전이 시작된다.

Not credited: Roman Neumoev with "Инструкция по выживанию" and Oleg Sudakov with "Гражданская оборона".
