1969년 미국뿐만 아니라 전 세계적으로 화제를 불러일으켰던 음악축제 ′우드스탁′이 한창이던 여름날, 100마일 정도 떨어진 뉴욕시 외곽에서 ′할렘 컬쳐 페스티벌′이라는 음악 축제가 동시에 개최되었다. 스티비 원더, BB킹 등 그 당시 미국 음악계를 호령했던 뮤지션들의 공연과 30만이라는 어마어마한 관객들이 참여했던 이 페스티벌은 모두 녹화되었지만 단지 흑인들의 축제라는 이유로 그 어느 곳에서도 방영되지 못한 채 사장되고 말았다. 50년 후 을 통해 그 당시 생생했던 공연장면과 전국에서 몰려든 관객들의 환호와 갈채가 처음 공개된다. 마치 열광적인 공연을 본 것 같은 이 작품은 왜 그 당시 흑인 음악을 ′소울′이라고 불렀는지 여실히 보여준다. Little Bird's first South African production, SOPHIATOWN has won the award for Best Documentary at the Cape Town World Cinema Festival 2003. SOPHIATOWN celebrates the great popular jazz music of the 1950's in South Africa; a rich tradition deserving international attention. Director Pascale Lamche, traces the music, uncovers the artists who created it and the unique culture in which it thrived, concentrated in Sophiatown, Johannesburg's own Harlem, which fuelled by liberation politics until its destruction by the Apartheid regime. The film features Nelson Mandela and such household names from the jazz world as Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, Abdullah Ibrahim, Jonas Gwangwa and Caiphus Semenya.

On January 5, 1988, Artists Against Apartheid held a huge show in London to protest against the racist regime in South Africa, demanding the release of Nelson Mandela, jailed for 25 years for fighting to end prejudice against black people. British musicians like Peter Gabriel, Elvis Costello and Sting joined beloved bands like Style Council and Big Audio Dynamite, and black musicians of the calibre of Sade, Hugh Masekela, Maxi Priest and Princess, to show the world that there is no more tolerance. for racism.
