전쟁의 상처가 채 가시지 않은 때, 술집에서 실수로 사람을 죽이고 경찰에 쫓기던 빌이 독신간호원 제인의 아파트에 뛰어든다. 둘 다 외로웠던 이들은 서로 정이 들어 잠시 즐겁게 지내지만 빌의 충동적이고 난폭한 행동은 제인을 실망시킨다. 새 출발을 약속한 빌은 병원의 트럭운전사로 취직하여 둘은 앞날을 약속하는데 이 때 술집사건을 목격한 해리가 빌을 협박한다. 빌은 그를 칼로 찔러 다시 범죄를 저지른다. 빌은 제인의 권유에 따라 자수하고 새로운 삶을 설계한다.
