Anders Østergaard’s film is an investigative look at the year the Berlin Wall fell, documenting the events that took place in Hungary as a prelude to the dramatic changes in November 1989. The director recreates the events and leads the audiences deep into the politicians’ secret meeting rooms by using a mix of interviews, archive material and reconstructed scenes and dialogues.

2007년 미얀마의 승려들의 평화적 민주화 집회가 전세계 헤드라인을 장식하면서 미얀마의 정치상황이 외부에 알려졌다. 그러나 미얀마는 여전히 독재정권 지배하에 있으며 10만 명 이상 투옥되어 있다. 외국 방송사들의 출입은 물론, 인터넷 사용도 금지된 그곳에는 버마의 민주음성Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB), 일명 버마 VJ가 정부의 탄압에도 굴하지 않고 미얀마의 소식을 외부로 송출한다. 감독은 이들이 촬영한 핸드헬드 영상을 편집하여 영화로 만든다. 2007년 버마의 승려들이 중심이 된 민주화 시위는 3,000여명 이상이 살해당한 것으로 추정되는 1988년 8월 8일의 시위, 이른바‘8888 민주항쟁’이후 최대 규모였다. 40년 이상 군사정권의 철저한 강압 통치를 받고 있는 버마에서 이 같은 대규모 시위는 이례적이었다. 한국의 87년 6월 항쟁처럼 군사정권의 항복선언을 받아낼 기세로 타올랐던 버마의 민주화 요구는 그러나, 군사정권의 무차별한 진압으로 인해 허무하게 꺼지고 말았다. 국제사회는 일제히 미얀마 정부를 비난했으나, 그들은 언제나처럼 눈과 귀를 막았다. 와 같은 영화에서 우리는 여전히 가느다란 희망의 끈을 잡는다. ‘국경없는 기자회’조사 결과, 버마는 북한과 함께 언론 자유도면에서 세계 최하위권을 다툰다. 이 영화는 외부의 정보가 스며들지도, 내부의 사정이 전해지지도 않는 독재 국가 미얀마에서 무명의 활동가가 유출시킨 클립을 조합해 만든 다큐멘터리다. 2007년 민주화 시위 당시의 급박했던 상황이 고스란히 담겨있다. 카메라만 들고 있어도 체포될 수 있는 나라 미얀마에서는 촬영 자체가 목숨을 건 일이다. 총과 총이 맞서는 전쟁터처럼, 시위 현장에선 비밀경찰과 활동가의 카메라가 서로를 겨눈다. 소니가 1960년대 휴대용 비디오 카메라를 출시한 이래, 역사가 출렁인 변혁의 거리에서 확인된 교훈을 이 영화는 되새기게 한다.‘ 카메라는 힘이다’(백승찬)
