바다를 향해 여행 중이던 줄리안 포(크리스천 슬레이터)가 어느 한적한 시골 마을에 들른다. 포는 마을 사람들의 시선이 곱지 않음을 느끼는데, 마을 사람들이 그를 나쁜 사람으로 오해하고 다그치자 엉겁결에 자살하러 왔다고 거짓말을 한다. 포는 그때부터 마을 사람들의 시선을 끌게 되고 머무는 동안 그 마을 여자인 사라(로빈 튜니)와 사랑에 빠진다. 한편 여관 주인은 포가 자살하도록 유도하여 마을 사람들이 그의 자살 시기를 놓고 게임을 벌이게끔 한다. 어느날 사라는 포에게 편지를 남기고 자살해버린다. 그러자 마을 사람들은 약속을 지키라며 포를 몰아세운다.
