존(John Baxter: 토니 로버츠 분)은 소설가이지만 생계를 위해 각종 심령 단체의 사기극을 고발하는 폭로 잡지에서 일한다. 어느날 아미티빌의 주택에서 사기극을 취재하던 존은 집주인 샌더스가 집을 처리 못해 고민증인걸 알고 헐값에 사들인다. 그 집은 이전에 일가족이 죽은 흉가이기 때문에 사려는 사람이 없었고, 마침 아내 낸시(Nancy Baxter: 테스 하퍼 분)와 이혼하여 갈 곳이없던 존으로서는 안성맞춤이었던 것. 그러나 집 계약을 하려던 샌더스가 의문의 죽음을 당하고, 갈은 잡지사 동료 멜라니(Melanie: 캔디 클락 분)도 그집에서 공포이 경험을 한다. 그 집에서 찍은 사진을 분석하던 멜라니는 놀라운 발견을 하고 그걸 가지고 가는 도중 차에 화재가 나 숨진다. 그러나 초자연적 현상을 믿지 않는 존은 계속 아미티빌에 산다. 존과 이혼한 낸시는 딸 수잔(Susan Baxter: 로리 로린 분)이 아빠 집에 가는 걸 불길하게 느껴 금한다. 그러나 친구들의 성화에 못이겨 수잔은 아미티빌에 가고 거기서 보트를 타다가 익사한다. 이때 딸 수잔의 유령을 집안에서 본 낸시는 수잔이 죽었다는 것을 믿지 않는다. 존은 그런 낸시 때문에 초자연현상 전문가인 엘리웃을 찾아, 그집에 대한 과학적 조사를 제안받는다. 여러 장비를 통해 조사하던 중, 수잔의 목소리가 들리면서 낸시는 이상한 형체를 따라서 지하실의 우물로 걸어간다. 그리고 우물 속에서 나타난 불을 뿜는 괴물에 의해 엘리웃이 빨려들어간다. 그리고 집은 온도가 급격히 떨어지면서 물건들이 혼자 날아다닌다. 낸시와 짐은 겨우 집에서 빠져나오고 집은 폭발되어 무너진다. 그리고 지하실의 우물은 불이 붙으면서 이상한 물체가 어디론가 날아간다.

When one of his patients is found murdered, psychiatrist Dr. Sam Rice is visited by the investigating officer but refuses to give up any information. He's then visited by the patient's mistress, Brooke Reynolds, whom he quickly falls for despite her being a likely murder suspect.
