1962년, 73세의 찰리 채플린Charles Chaplin: 로버트 다우니 주니어 분)은 스위스의 자택에서 자신의 자서전 편집을 맡은 작가 조지 헤이든(가상의 인물, George Hayden: 안소니 홉킨스 분)에게 자신이 살아온 이야기를 들려준다. 영국 뮤직홀 배우 부부의 아들로 태어난 채플린은 건달이다시피한 아버지가 어려서 죽고, 어머니(Hannah Chaplin: 제랄딘 채플린 분) 마저 정신 이상으로 어려서 헤어지게 된다. 17세에 당시 영국에서 최고의 인기를 누리던 프레드 카노(Fred Karno: 존 토우 분) 극단에 입단, 인기를 끌면서 헤티 켈리(Hetty Kelly: 모이라 켈리 분)라는 극단 배우를 사랑하게 된다. 당시 헐리웃에는 단편 희극 영화를 주로 만들며 '코미디왕'으로 불리는 케스턴 영화사의 감독 겸 프로듀서 맷 세네트(Matt Sennett: 댄 애크로이드 분)가 단편 희극에 쓸 영국 배우를 찾다가 채플린을 스카웃하게 되어 미국으로 오게 된다. 채플린은 당시 흔하게 볼 수 있었던 영국인들 모습을 재미있게 분장하여 그의 전설이 시작된다. 1914년 그는 캐스턴 영화사에서 짧막한 희극 영화를 35편이나 찍으면서 대중의 우상으로 떠올랐고, 이듬해에는 형 시드니(Sydney Chaplin: 폴 라이스 분)가 영국에서 건너와 채플린의 메니저가 되면서 영화사로 옮겨 단편 영화들에 직접 감독까지 겸하게 된다. 1919년 채플린은 그리피스, 매리 픽포드(Mary Pickford: 마리아 핏틸로 분), 더글러스 페어뱅크스(Douglas Fairbanks: 케빈 클라인 분) 등과 함께 유나이티드 아티스트 사를 만든 뒤에 장편영화 제작에 착수하는데...

라이언은 아내와 딸이 있는 해군 사관학교의 교수며 전직 해병이었다. 그런 그가 영국에 왕립 해군 사관학교에 연설차 갔다가 우연히 황테후의 사촌인 홈즈경에 대한 테러 현장을 목격하게 되고 그 자리에서 테러범들과 총격전을 벌이다 그들 중 한 명인 테러단 두목 숀 밀러의 친동생을 사살하고 만다. 그는 바로 현장에서 같이 잡힌 숀 밀러는 유죄 판결을 받고 교도소로 이송 중 자기 동지들에 의해 구출을 받게 되고, 탈출한 밀러는 라이언에게 동생에 대한 복수를 하겠다고 다짐한다. 미국으로 건너온 밀러는 자기 동지들과 함께 라이언의 가족을 모두 몰살시키려 하지만 계획이 실패한 줄 모른 채 북아프리카로 돌아간다. 아프리카에 도착한 후에야 자신의 계획이 틀어진 걸 안 밀러는 다시금 복수를 하려 하지만 그를 키워준 케빈이 이를 저지하고, 애초 계획대로 영국과 IRA간의 분쟁을 일으켜 나중에 IRA가 완전 소탕된뒤 자기들의 세력을 잡기위해 홈즈경을 다시 납치해 몸값을 받으려 음모를 꾸미는데...

남아공의 특혜받는 백인 국민으로 태어난 도날드 우즈(Donald Woods: 케빈 클라인 분)는 지방 신문의 편집 국장으로 흑인민권운동가 스티브 비코(Steve Biko: 덴젤 워싱턴 분)에 대한 비방기사를 실었다가 흑인 여의사 람펠레 박사(Dr. Bamphele: 조셋 사이몬 분)의 항의 방문을 받는다. 그녀의 권유로 비코를 직접 찾아가 만난 우즈는 아프리카인 고유의 문화와 생존권을 회복하기 위해 평화투쟁의 방법을 지도하고 있는 비코에게 깊은 감명을 받고 조국 남아프리카의 장래는 흑백인이 공존하는 민주적 체제여야 한다는 확신을 갖게 된다. 백인사회의 하급노동만을 전담하면서 그들이 길들이는 방식대로 교육을 받던 흑인들이 비코의 지도로 의식화되고 고유의 문화운동으로 삶의 보람을 찾는 것을 기사에 반영하던 우즈는 정부당국으로부터 불온의 딱지가 붙어서 요시찰 인물이 된다. 그러나 그는 비코가 당국에 의해 체포되고 고문사 당한 다음 단식투쟁에 의해 죽었다고 허위발표되자 시체를 촬영하여 세계 언론기구에 우송한 다음 보안당국에 의해 연금상태가 되고, 흑백차별에 반대하는 모든 백인의 운명도 흑인과 같아진다는 것을 체험한다. 그는 탄압을 견디다 못해 비코의 전기를 출간하기 위해 국외로 탈출할 결심을 하고 호주방송의 특파원인 브루스 기자의 도움으로 남아공 국경밖으로 극적으로 탈출하고, 첩보영화를 방불케 하는 기발하고 대담한 작전으로 아내와 다섯 아이들로 국경을 넘게 하여 비행기편으로 영국 망명에 성공한다.
