베라(니브 캠벨 역)는 아름다우면서 변덕스러운 여성으로 자신의 성적, 지적 에너지의 한계를 체험하려 한다. 베라는 거리에서 남자를 고르고, 여성 파트너와 성적 유희를 즐기며 자기와 일하게 될 사람과 솔직하게 성담론을 나눈다. 부유하고 자유로운 부모 밑에서 자란 베라는 어느 날 어른이 되기로 결심한다. 베라의 남자 친구 포드(프레드 웰러 역)는 말 많은 수완가다. 돈을 벌기 위해서라면 무엇이든지 하는 포드는 이탈리아 미디어의 거물 카운트 토마소(도미닉 치아니즈 역)를 만나 절호의 기회를 얻는다. 포드는 자신이 포주 역할을 하는 가운데 베라와 카운트를 연결시켜 십만 달러를 받을 계획을 세운다. 놀랍게도 베라는 그의 제안을 받아들인다. 귀족적 취향을 지닌 억만장자 카운트 토마소는 베라의 성적 매력, 지력, 단순함에 곧 매료된다. 거래를 마치면서 카운트는 베라에게 십만 달러가 아닌 백만 달러를 지불한다. 모든 것이 예상과 달리 척척 진행되고 있는 것 같이 보이지만 이 두 남성은 베라에게 감춰진 욕망을 읽지 못한다. 포드와 카운트가 뜻하지 않게 베라의 손에 놀아나다가 그녀의 야심이 실현되는 장면은 꽤나 충격적이다.
