How to Trap a Woodpecker

George the woodsman's wife, fed up with life in the wilderness, shows him an ad for a fancy but expensive hat. She then kicks him out of his log cabin and sends him on a quest to trap Woody and obtain his feathers to make such a hat. However, all of George's attempts to trap Woody backfire on him. Woody then offers to sacrifice his feathers if George would stop trying to capture him. George accepts the offer, and Woody gives him a big present and tells him the coveted hat is in it. George then goes home and puts the "hat" (which is really a SKUNK!) on his wife's head. When she looks in the mirror and notices the truth, she screams and the skunk sprays her! George's wife is now thoroughly exasperated and promises to get even with him when she finishes her ensuing bath.

Notorious criminal Yeggs Benedict, having just pulled a $50,000 bank robbery, hears a radio report in his hideout that Inspector Willoughby has been assigned the case. Well aware of the Inspector's uncanny ability as a sleuth, Yeggs takes off for the Himalaya Mountains of Tibet. Yeggs no sooner reaches his cave hideout than he sees Willoughby approaching on yakback- the yak sniffing the trail a la bloodhound. Trapped on a dangerous, avalanche-threatened trail, Yeggs starts an avalanche, but it engulfs him instead.

Finally, Woody gets away for a vacation in the woods, thinking that he has escaped the bright lights and publicity men for a while. However, who shows up but the pesky photographer? Woody tries a number of tricks to get rid of the photographer, including setting a grizzly bear on him. In the end, the photographer gets back at Woody with a cannonball in the rear end.

Space Mouse chooses a Siamese cat disguise.. Before he leaves, though, King-Size hands him a pill telling him to swallow it if he gets into inescapable trouble. When Space Mouse wants to know what the pill will do, King Size claims all he knows is that all secret agents take along some kind of pill for emergencies.

After being attacked by a little old lady (for trying to steal her popcorn), he flies to the country where he notices a farmer and his pet crow, Jubilee, the latter of which is well fed. Woody makes a deal with the crow (they'll trade places) and Jubilee heads to the city while Woody disguises himself as the crow. When Woody's disguise comes off, the farmer isn't impressed and plans to stuff and mount the bird. Woody manages to talk his way out of it and is free to go only to be clobbered by a vengeful returning Jubilee who also had eyes on the lady's popcorn!

Inspector Willoughby has traced evil international jewel thief and master of disguise Vampira Hyde to the Limehouse District in London. As Big Ben chimes out the hour of 4 p.m., Willoughby realizes that it's time for tea, and he enters a tearoom. He's served by a woman whose face is familiar to him. Suddenly, Willoughby recollects that she is the woman he's been seeking. She, in turn, realizes that she's been recognized, and by means of a pill, quickly swallowed, she quickly changes into a sweet, modest, elderly woman.
Tragic Magic

Woody goes to a magic show. He chomps popcorn and continually ribs the magician about his "easy" tricks, finally driving most of the audience away. Then the magician calls Woody on stage to "assist" him in a few "tricks," which enables him to get back at Woody for some of his taunts. Then Woody turns the tables, putting the magician under a magic spell. As the magician comes out of the spell, he tries to get rid of Woody by shooting him out of a cannon. But after the shot is fired, Woody's still there. In desperation, the magician climbs into the cannon and fires himself off the stage!

Phoney Express

Inspector Willoughby is in Paris looking to capture the famous international spy, Agent X-13. He finds the spy "disguised" (with his head upside down) but Willoughby uncovers the "disguise" and gives chase. Agent X-13 ends up at the train station and riding the Orient Express. The Inspector follows with the agent using a variety of schemes to do away with Willoughby. He notices a downhill grade and sends a safe sliding down to crush the Inspector but the grade becomes an uphill grade and the safe ends up crashing into X-13. X-13 tries feeding him several poisonous foods and Willoughby's stomach turns out to have a trap door. Finally, Willoughby and X-13 battle on top of the train with X-13 leaping from the train to avoid hitting a tunnel and lands in Willoughby's net, then finding himself tied to a scale after going through the tunnel. The Inspector, having captured the crook, exclaims, "That's what I call apprehending crime on a big scale!"

Since this job is finished, Woody gets on a bus with his automatic extension ladder, which keeps hitting the bus driver in the head every time that the bus stops. The driver finally throws Woody off, but Woody manages to get back on. The comedy with the ladder continues, finally involving a traffic cop, a motorcycle policeman and Pierre, as well as Woody and the driver. The story ends with all the participants, on the motorcycle, crashing into a brick wall.

How to Stuff a Woodpecker

How to Stuff a Woodpecker is the 100th animated cartoon short subject in the Woody Woodpecker series. Released theatrically on May 18, 1960. Professor Strudel relates the story of how he managed to catch and stuff Woody Woodpecker... or did he? In Professor Strudel's Taxidermy Shop, there is seen a series of stuffed animals: a humming hippopotamus, a growling gorilla, a kangaroo, a half-stuffed elephant (due to lack of stuffing), and finally, Woody on a pedestal. The professor proceeds to relate how he outsmarted and captured Woody. In a forest, he hears Woody pecking away at a tree. He gets up and catches Woody, who bops the professor with a mixture of Tabasco and chili powder. With a roar, the revived professor expels the mixture, which hits a tree and reduces it to ashes. The professor then employs various ways and means to capture Woody.

On the Pebbley Beach Golf Course, Dapper Denver Dooley and Woody Woodpecker are in a championship playoff. The prize: $25,000. After both contenders make holes in one, a psychological battle begins. Woody crunches celery. Dapper drives himself into a sand trap. Woody proves himself too light for quicksand; Dapper sinks. At every turn, Dapper proceeds to lure and trick poor Woody until Woody's game seems lost. All that Dapper needs to win is a short putt into the cup, but he's seized with a magnificent case of hiccups. Woody wins and hiccups dollar bills!

After a short history on bees and bee-keeping, we find Windy the bear's attempts to steal honey from a bee hive (he is teaching his son the "right" way to get honey) only to be attacked by the bee inside. Windy tries a number of attempts to outsmart the bee. He floods the hive, dresses as a queen bee, uses a bathroom plunger to trap the bee (only to get it stuck to various parts of his body) and finally tries to dynamite it, only succeeding in blowing himself up. At the hospital, he is served honey and hotcakes in bed... by a male nurse who looks suspiciously like the bee he just tangled with!

Windy Bear notices his son heading off for school but, after he has left, notices he forgot his school books. He chases after him with them but is distracted by a nearby river stocked with trout. He decides to go fishing but is interrupted by Truant Officer Willoughby who mistakes him for a very large schoolboy playing hookey. Afterwards, Willoughby tries various methods to get Windy to go to school and, likewise, Windy tries various methods to avoid having to go to school. Finally, Windy is sent to school and, as punishment, must serve as the chime in the school's bell!

Woody Woodpecker is engaged in combat with a big tomcat and after several break-even escapades, Woody finally tricks the cat into a dogcatcher's truck which is filled with dogs with a sour disposition, especially regarding cats. Woody immediately wishes for immense wealth, and he gets it-- by robbing a bank without realizing it. A police chase follows; will Woody escape, and what will his other two wishes be?

They meet a wolf, who takes a short-cut to Grandma's, but Splinter and Knothead take an even shorter cut and get there before him. After they get through wearing him out, Grandma decides the wolf is a good prospect for matrimony and drags him off to the altar.

Art, the artist, receives a circular announcing a prize for the best painting of a desert flower. Woody Woodpecker also reads it and decides to enter the competition. He and Art wage a battle all over the desert regarding who is to paint the only desert flower in the area. Woody wins the battle and the contest, and is awarded a painting of a bag of gold.
Niagara Fools

Woody Woodpecker visits Niagara Falls---on the Canadian and American side both, according to some viewers---and asks about going over the famous falls in a barrel which the guard tells him it is forbidden, which immediately makes Woody decide to do it, anyway. Woody uses everything BUT a ladder in his attempts, and the guard prevents him going over several times, but the guard winds up in a barrel and goes over himself. Woody, dressed as a policeman, is awaiting him at the bottom to give him a ticket for breaking the law.
Calling All Cuckoos

A clockmaker goes into the woods in search of a cuckoo and finds Woodpecker. Figuring a coo-coo could double as a cuckoo, the clockmaker sets out to capture Woody, take him home and put him to work on the clock. Woody figures otherwise, and introduces the clockmaker to an angry bear. Chaos follows.

Woody Woodpecker is a guest at a television show and walks off with a space helmet and a space gun as souvenirs. He pretends to be a man from Mars, and is believed to the extent that he is caught and sent to an atomic laboratory for testing, which convinces the scientists he does belong on Mars. They send him to Mars on a rocket-ship and, once there, the Martians are convinced he is a crazy alien from Earth, and start testing him in their laboratories.

Woody Woodpecker is working as a woodcarver, a very apt occupation for a woodpecker, and is carving a wooden when the outlaw, Chief Charley Horse, being pursued by the sheriff, ducks into Woody's shop. The sheriff also arrives and there is much confusion on the premises before Woody gets the reward for capturing the chief.

Woody Woodpecker is reading "Hansel and Gretel" to his two young cousins, Knothead, a boy, and Splinter,a girl. The children decide to get lost in a forest. A cat spots them and lures them to a gingerbread house. The cat tries to make woodpecker-pie out of the kids, but they outsmart him and escape.

He leads Woody on a phony treasure hunt on Cataloni Island where all the materials Woody needs to continue the hunt (treasure maps, fire extinguishers, toll bridges, etc.) cost him a bundle.

A western bank robber makes a getaway and hides his loot in a tree. Woody Woodpecker pops out of the tree with the bag containing the money. Woody takes off with the robber in close pursuit. The chase leads back to the town where the robber makes many attempts to retrieve the bag but is always outsmarted by Woody. A posse arrives on the scene and Woody delivers both the robber and the loot into the sheriff's hands.

Woody is running a babysitting service and is offered $50 by one couple if he will look after their "baby". Not one to pass up this much money, he jumps at the chance. He shows the parents out and settles in. Unfortunately, when he checks in on the infant, the "baby" is revealed to be a pet gorilla!

Milford, the family pig, is being given a birthday party, on the farm, by Maw and Paw and all the kids, but he is kidnapped by one of the 39 Boomer Brothers on the neighboring farm, who want to make bar-b-que out of Milford. Maw and Paw set out to rescue Milford, but they are thwarted by the red-bearded brothers. But victory finally comes and Milford comes home to celebrate his birthday.
Paw's Night Out

Paw arrives home from a night out with the boys and is determined to enter his house without waking Maw. Unable to do it himself, he asks for assistance from Milford the pig who supplies him with tips on how to stealthily enter the house...but they all fail miserably. Finally, Milford suggests, "Have you tried the back door?" It is unlocked and Paw enters quietly...only to discover Maw hasn't arrived home yet! At this point, Maw comes home and Paw goes out the front door to berate Maw for coming home so late. Maw goes in the back door ("so's not to wake Paw") and sees Paw at the front door at which point it's presumed *he* is just coming home and is berated by Maw anyway.

Woody is driving down the city street singing a "screwy" driving song. Used car owner Buzz Buzzard tries to interest Woody in buying a new car (after sabotaging the one he has, natch). He shows him various cars but they all are utterly lacking in quality and leave a lot to be desired...

The Jingling Bros. Circus is performing for one night only in the town that farm horse Sugarfoot lives in. Paw has Sugarfoot pulling a plow. A new billboard goes up with pretty circus horse Starbrite's picture on it. She is a star at the circus. Sugarfoot falls for her and leaves his farm to meet her. Once he arrives, he sees Starbrite's trainer beating her. Sugarfoot kicks the villainous circus trainer. Sugarfoot woos the crowd with his ability to thwart the angry trainer, who keeps shooting at him with a rifle and missing every shot while, at the same time, getting the worst end of each thing he attempts to do to wrangle the horse. Paw is discouraged until Sugarfoot shows up again... this time with a bride and four little ponies.
A Horse's Tale

Sugarfoot, the faithful old plow-horse, fearing his days and place on the farm are numbered since his master had purchased a tractor, destroys it. The farmer is outraged and banishes Sugarfoot from the farm. Sugarfoot is determined to make the money needed to buy his master a new tractor, and he becomes a movie-double for a screen Wonder Horse of the Movies, and makes enough money to buy a new tractor. The farmer forgives him and, as a reward, takes him to the movies, where Sugarfoot sees the star-horse getting all the credit for all of Sugarfoot's stunt-doubling.
Chilly Willy

A schooner anchors at the South Pole, and the skipper goes ashore and leaves the ship's mascot, a St. Bernard dog, to stand watch and guard the ship. A small penguin, Chilly Willy (the only penguin not equipped for cold weather...anywhere), sees the ship and tries to get warm by its stove. The watchdog attempts to get rid of him, but Willy manages to get the dog drunk from the rum in its own cask. The captain returns to find Willy saving the ship from sinking, while the dog is found sleeping it off. Willy is made mascot and the dog is tossed in the ship's brig.

Plywood Panic

Milford the pig gets the mail and informs Paw that the family has won a new house. The catch is they have to put it together themselves. Of course, with the family's intelligence, this isn't an easy task. Examples: Paw is enrolled in measuring tape when Milford lets go too suddenly and when Maw carries a board, it starts vibrating to the point where it carries her into the air dropping her into the washing machine (Paw thinks he's watching Maw on TV). Finally, the house is finished and the family moves inside. Unfortunately, Paw steps on a loose floorboard causing the house to disassemble into a pile of rubble.
Maw and Paw

This cartoon is based on Universal's Maw and Paw Kettle features. Maw and Paw and their kids live on a farm and can be described as a rural family with below average intelligence (their pet pig, Milford, is regarded in the opening titles as the "Smart One"). At dinner, Milford answers a phone-in quiz contest correctly and wins a new car for the family. The problem is no one in the family knows how to drive it (Maw thinks the antenna is a "new fangled clothesline").
The Flying Turtle

In this entry in Universal-International's "Foolish Fable" series (U-I production number 8327), Herman the Turtle's only ambition is to be able to fly. He reads articles on the subject and also enrolls in Madam Bluejay's Flying School, all of which leads to failure. He pays an eagle to give him flying lessons but the eagle drops him in the ocean and kills him. But Herman goes to Turtle Heaven where he is given a pair of wings and flies to his content. The "Be careful what you wish for" moral goes unstated.
The Mouse and the Lion

The Lion, the King of the Jungle, is taking his royal snooze when a mouse comes on a safari to his royal hideaway. The mouse is from Bungling Brothers Circus [us], and his mission is to take HRH back to the states as a circus act. The mouse then goes about his business of capturing the lion. At the fadeout, back in the USA, the lion of performing on a precarious tight-rope, high above the arena sawdust, while the mouse whip lashes him.
The Dog That Cried Wolf

A sheep rancher entrusts his goofy sheepdog Dizzy to guard his herd one night. The dog is told to blow a whistle when he sees a wolf, but he spends his time fooling his master by "crying wolf," and he proceeds to blow the whistle for no reason other than to excite the farmer. The fun begins when a real wolf shows up to steal the flock after Dizzy has worn out his warning. Taken from the "Boy Who Cried Wolf" story.

Boarding house proprietor Wally Walrus takes out an ad in the local paper looking for a sweetheart. Woody reads this and decides he might be able to trick Wally out of some cooking if he dresses up like a girl and answers the ad.
The Beach Nut

A crowd gathers at the beach to witness vacationer Wally Walrus thrashing Woody Woodpecker. Wally explains, in flashback, why he is trying to rid himself of Woody... it seems he went to the beach for his day off and, unfortunately, the obnoxious woodpecker had the same idea disrupting Wally's peace and quiet with his antics, even disguising himself as a swami to fool Wally into "finding" him. Back to the present, Wally concludes his story and hurls Woody into the ocean but not without bringing the entire dock down with him, sending Wally and the crowd into the drink themselves!
The Barber of Seville

Woody is standing outside the Seville Barber Shop looking at the ads. Wanting a "victory haircut", he decides to enter the shop only to find the owner has stepped out for a physical. Woody decides to cut his own hair ("I cut my own teeth") but unfortunately is mistaken for the owner when two other customers enter, one an Indian who wants a quick shampoo and the other, a construction worker who wants "the whole works" and, unfortunately, gets it.
Dangerous Dan McFoo

An arctic saloon. The tiny dog, Dan McFoo, is playing a pinball-like marble game in the back. His girlfriend, Sue, sounding like Katharine Hepburn, stands by. A stranger comes in with eyes for Sue; he begins a boxing match with Dan. After Dan gets knocked down, he accuses the stranger of having something in the glove; the ref finds four horseshoes and a horse. After the fight goes on a while with no conclusion, the narrator tosses a couple of guns, the lights go out, and Dan is shot or is he?
Have You Got Any Castles?

Another entry in the "books come alive" subgenre, with possibly more books coming alive than any other. We begin with some musical numbers, notably the various pages of Green Pastures all joining in on a song, The Thin Man entering The White House Cookbook and exiting much fatter, and The House of Seven (Clark) Gables singing backup to Old King Cole. The Three Musketeers break loose, become Three Men on a Horse, grab the Seven Keys to Baldpate, and set the Prisoner of Zenda free. They are soon chased by horsemen from The Charge of the Light Brigade and Under Two Flags and beset by the cannons of All Quiet on the Western Front. All this disturbs the sleep of Rip Van Winkle, who opens Hurricane so that everyone is (all together now) Gone with the Wind.
Egghead Rides Again

City dweller Egghead dreams of being a cowboy, but his bouncing around gets him kicked out of his boarding house. He sees an ad for a ranch looking for a cowboy and applies. His tryout includes tests of marksmanship and use of a branding iron, but most of it consist of chasing down and roping a troublesome little calf. He passes the test, but the job isn't exactly what he dreamed of.
Pigs Is Pigs

A hungry little pig eats a couple of pies off the windowsill. When it's time for dinner, he ties together the spaghetti of all the other little pigs and eats it all. That night, he has a nightmare where he is force-fed by a mad scientist.

A cartoonist falls asleep at the drawing board and into the clutches of his own villains, until Beans the Cat comes to the rescue.

Mother rabbit sends her charges off to school. Peter needs a bit more attention; he's hiding with the chickens, using a feather duster to stand in for a tail. On his way to school, Peter starts to sneak into a farmer's field, but is caught by three schoolmates. They threaten to tell the teacher, and Peter heads off to school.

I Wish I Had Wings

An expectant father rooster fetches doctor stork, who comes out with a basket full of white chicks and one little black one, who gets crowded out of the food. After singing the title song, he manages to improvise a pair of wings and fly over the chicken coop, but regrets it when he is chased by a mean scarecrow.
The Queen Was in the Parlor
Animation
The king returns to his castle, and asks where the queen is; she's in the parlor, and won't be seen, according to the title song. He goes to his throne and summons his jester, Goopy Geer. A black knight arrives and threatens one of the young ladies in court; Goopy fights him off, first with an ax, then in armor from kitchen utensils, then butting him with a mounted animal head, which makes the knight's armor fall apart. He pulls it together again and runs away.
Bosko and Bruno
Animation
Bosko, carrying his hobo stick, travels along the railroad tracks with his dog, Bruno. Unfortunately, they're both on the tracks as they cross a bridge and realize that a train is coming perilously near. They manage to escape via a handcar, which was waiting for them on the tracks. however, once over the bridge, Bruno gets his foot caught near the switch. Bruno escapes, but not before allowing his poor master to think he's dead. Bosko is angry at his pet, but outrage turns to fear when the sound of another train gets them both panicking again. Luckily, the "train whistle" is only the mooing of a cow. The pair's adventures continue as they try to steal a chicken for her eggs. Finally, they end up on a runaway boxcar and have a second encounter with the obnoxious cow.

Freddy comes to a party and is a hit; he then goes on to be the star quarterback at the football game.

The film opens with Bosko taking a bath while whistling "Singin' in the Bathtub". A series of gags allows him to play the shower spray like a harp, pull up his pants by tugging his hair, and give the limelight to the bathtub itself which stands on its hind feet to perform a dance.
