'죽음의 신', '철새', '거인', '악마전'. 이렇게 4부로 구성된 는 코펜하겐의 습지대에 세워진 음울한 종합병원의 모습을 그리고 있다. 병원에서 유일하게 죽은 메리의 상처를 알고 영혼을 달래려던 드루쎄 부인(크리슨 롤프)이 어느날 병원을 나서다가 앰뷸런스에 치인다. 꾀병이라도 부려 킹덤에 머물고자 했던 드루쎄 부인은 심각한 중상에 뒤이은 죽음으로 킹덤을 떠나게 된다. 영혼과 악령의 추격은 킹덤의 미궁같은 복도를 통과하며 계속되고, 킹덤의 앰뷸런스는 미친 듯이 질주한다. 병원의 피로에 찌든 모그와 병원 사람들은 죽음을 담보로 중앙선을 가로지르는 앰뷸런스의 스피드 기록에 내기를 건다. 헬머(에른스트 휴고 예어가르트)는 자신의 과실을 세상에 알리려는 모나를 세탁물 컨베이어에 숨기고 킹덤은 점점 더 답이 없는 의문들로 뒤덮힌다.

심령술에 빠져 노후를 보내고 있는 드루쎄 부인(키르스텐 롤페스)은 적적함을 달래기 위해 상습적으로 병원에 입원한다. 어느날 그녀는 병원에 어린 소녀 메리의 영혼이 떠돌고 있음을 느끼고 메리의 억울한 죽음에 얽힌 사연을 알게 된다. 메리의 죽음은 의사 헬머(에른스트 휴고 예어가르트)의 의료사고와 관련이 있는 것으로 헬머는 자신의 과오를 숨기기 위해 수술 기록을 없애려 한다. 그러던 어느날 보건 장관이 병원의 감사를 나오면서 헬머 뿐 아니라 킹덤의 행정을 맡고 있는 모즈거드 박사 등 병원 의료진들은 긴장한다. 한편 주디스는 전 애인의 아이를 임신한 사실을 뒤늦게 알게 되고 뱃 속의 태아는 비정상적인 속도로 자라난다. 죽은 메리의 영혼은 점점 더 자주 출몰하고 병원 전체의 묵은 비리가 서서히 드러나기 시작한다.

It is the adult Gustav Adolf, who tells the story of the momentous day when he as a little boy with his father and mother and the whole staircase, went to the beach to enjoy the pleasures of bathing. We are in 1930s working-class neighborhood in Copenhagen. In a backyard apartment, we meet the little working-up of small Gustav Adolf (Benjamin Rothenborg Vibe) who has great respect for his father, Axel (Erik Clausen). Father has a very lively gab and is always ready to tell a story from her exciting life - often from the time he was on the big Argentine pampas.

Karl Åge and Regitze host a summer garden party for close friends, their son, and his family. Karl Åge is quiet, detached; Regitze is spirited, lively. He thinks back: love at first sight during the war, living together unmarried, her mother's hunger strike when they won't baptize their son. Regitze is passionate and forthright; she speaks her mind. He remembers her inviting a derelict for Christmas dinner, and the man shows up with five bashful friends. He recalls her taking on their son's teacher when the man slaps the lad. He remembers her love of dancing and his fear that his social clumsiness might end their relationship. Now, in twilight, he has other things to face.

A new foreman, Huus, arrives in a sleepy Danish village, much to the delight of the unmarried women there. However, Huus becomes very friendly with Katinka and her husband, Bai, the stationmaster. Man genkender let det lille samfund i "sovebyen", men store omvæltninger har fundet sted siden sidst, for beboerne på Solvænget har - med kommunestøtte - købt den ejendom, de bor i, og (- så kom noget, dengang, helt nyt) hustruerne har måttet tage arbejde for at klare økonomien! Helt forrygende er fru Rigmor Hansen (Bodil Udsen) som bestyrerinde af et Quick-vaskeri. Hendes "sandheder" om det nye dagligliv i Danmark sidder klokkeklart - og er evigt unge. Ejendommens første generalforsamling med gutterne i opgangen - og aflæggelse af første års regnskab, er gyldne scener fra dansk familiefilms guldalder.
