앤디(Andy Kaufman: 짐 캐리 분)는 어려서부터 밖에서 친구들과 놀기보다는 방안에서 혼자 벽을 쳐다보고 코미디를 하는 것을 즐기며 성장한다. 결국 자신의 소원대로 코미디언이 되지만, 앤디는 아이들이나 좋아할 만한 코미디를 하는 3류 코미디언으로 클럽무대를 전전한다. 성대묘사를 통한 공연으로 인기를 얻게 된 앤디. 우연히 그의 공연을 보게된 유명 매니저인 조지 샤피로(George Shapiro: 대니 드비토 분)의 눈에 띄어 발탁되어 자신의 재능을 인정받은 그는 첫 방송 출연에서의 성공으로 곧 시트콤 고정출연 제의를 받게 된다. 대본에 씌여있는 개그보다는 자신만의 개그를 선보이고 싶었던 앤디는 시트콤 출연에 따른 조건으로 자신의 쇼를 프로그램으로 만들어 줄 것과 토니 클랩튼(Tony Clifton)이라는 코미디언을 출연시켜줄 것을 제안한다. 조지 샤피로는 토니 클랩튼의 공연을 보러갔다가 그가 앤디 카우프만 자신임을 알게 된다. 엽기적인 행위와 기괴한 형태의 쇼를 선보이는 앤디의 인기는 나날이 늘어가지만 방송국 간부들 사이에서는 평가가 좋지 못하다. 사람들이 좋아하는 코미디는 선악의 대결이라는 생각을 지닌 앤디는 자신을 악을 사랑하는 인물로 만들어가며, 급기야 약한 여자들을 괴롭히는 레슬링 코미디를 시작하게 된다. 그러던 중 프로 레슬러 제리 롤러와 멤피스에서 프로레슬링 대결을 펼쳐지만 흠씬 두들겨 맞기만 하게 되고 '데이빗 레터맨쇼'에서 충돌을 빚자 방송국에서는 앤디의 출연을 꺼려하며 시트콤도 종용을 하게 된다. 삶의 의욕을 잃은 앤디는 설상가상으로 자신이 암에 걸린 사실을 알게 되는데.

The musical version of the successful play of Oldřich Daněk was transferred to the screen by director Jiří Sequens in 1986. It takes place in the 14th century in Bohemia during the reign of King Wenceslas IV.
