A little later, war breaks out, and Charlotte must, besides forgetting all she left behind, deal with her grandmother's depression, and her mother's suicide. To fight despair, Charlotte starts to paint, producing over one thousand images. "Is my life real, or is it theater?" This is the title she gives her body of work, which highlights her former life in Berlin. She finds herself though her art, but in 1943 is deported to Germany and Auschwitz.

작은 도시에 살고 있는 프로소로프 집안의 세 자매 올가(Olga: 잔느 와츠 분), 마샤(Masha: 조안 프로우라이트 분), 이리나(Irina: 루이스 퍼넬 분)는 현실생활에 만족하지 못한다. 독신이며 학교선생인 올가는 학교때문에 늘 두통에 시달리며 나이에 비해 늙어 버렸음을 탓한다. 막내인 이리나는 아버지가 살아있을 때처럼 모스코바에서 살기를 간절히 바라고 있다. 모스코바를 그리워 하기는 올가도 마찬가지이다. 둘째인 마샤는 18세에 학교선생과 결혼해 살고 있지만 삶의 재미를 모르고 살고 있다. 이들의 남자 형제인 안드레이(Andrei: 데렉 자코비 분)는 무관이었던 아버지와는 달리 모스코바 대학의 교수를 꿈꾸는 학자다. 자매는 안드레이가 모스코바 대학의 교수가 되면 함께 떠날 수 있을 거란 희망을 버리지 않고 있다. 하지만 그는 동네의 나타샤(Natasha: 셜리아 레이드 분)라는 여자와 결혼하고 시의회 회장의 비서일을 하게 된다. 새로 부임한 포병 장교와 사랑에 빠진 마샤, 지긋지긋한 현실을 벗어나려고 사랑하지도 않는 사람과 결혼하기로 결심하는 이리나, 결혼을 했더라면 그것도 동생인 마샤의 남편과 결혼을 했었더라면 행복했을지도 모르겠다고 생각하는 올가, 아내에게 사랑을 느끼지 못하는 안드레이, 이들 가족의 현실을 많이 꼬여 있다. 하지만 올가는 자신이 원하지는 않았지만 학교의 교장으로 선출되고, 마샤가 사랑한 사람은 다른 지역으로 발령이 나서 떠나고 이리나를 모스코바로 데려다 줄 유일한 사람이었던 약혼자는 결투에서 죽어버린다. 누구도 자신의 뜻대로 살지 못하는 것이다. 세자매에게 달라진 건 아무것도 없다. 그냥 주어진 삶을 살아가게 될 뿐.
