In 2013, the Golden Horse Film Festival celebrated its 50th anniversary. The ministry of Culture commissioned director Yang Li-chou to make a documentary about the history of Golden Horse. What is unique to this film is that it's not an ode to celebrities but about the role cinema plays in ordinary people's lives. It's a love letter to cinema, filmmakers and audiences.

In 1950s, Chinese Civil War ends with the defeat of Republic of China and the establishment of Communist China. The 93rd Division's soldiers take their families with them, exit southwestern China and enter northern Burma (Myanmar). The hike through forest is full of disasters and short of supplies, but the survivors reach and settle within border of Burma. They build a village, and ally with local armed gang to resist Burmese government's attacks. Later, the relocated government of Republic of China offers to take the soldiers and dependents to Taiwan, but some are disappointed with the government and decide to stay.

A down-and-out scholar Atsai is so disillusioned with life that he tries to commit suicide in a dilapidated temple. At that very moment, a female ghost appears on the scene. In one of her first film appearances Yukari plays an undercover Japanese criminal police officer investigating the gang led by Yamashita (Yasuaki Kurata). As in most of these Taiwanese films, slapstick comedy alternates with intense action. An absurd plot has something to do with missing bullion and a treasure map. Yamashita’s gang wants it, and so do an unlikely band of heroes, including an incompetent traffic cop, his cop wannabe girl friend, and a couple of card sharks who have teamed up with an infatuated gas station owner. Some of Taiwan’s best action actors provide excellent kung fu action.

Billionaire Suen falls seriously ill, he hopes to find his only son who has been missing for twenty years to inherit his fortune. Meanwhile, he tells his butlers to find a killer, to kill him when he is joyful, so that he won’t suffer too much from his illness. Suen meets a woman and asks her to move in, in return he promises to pass his fortune to her. Thief Yee, Scammer Tao, and Single Fong all flood in and assert that they are the son of Suen.

The expression hidden underneath the makeup is sad, but the clown forces a smile on his face. Kun, the clown in a dance troupe, performs the warm-up act but always gets booed by the audience, who cannot wait to see the sexy girls. In the end, the troupe owner fires him. Fortunately, Chu, the most popular dancer in the troupe known as “Swan”, is willing to leave the glamour on the stage behind and start a new life with Kun. However, although Taiwan is undergoing an economic boom, the fortune doesn’t trickle down to the bottom of society. Kun, who has been struggling, decides to leave Chu since she has a better chance to succeed on her own.
