보넷(Charles Bonnet: 휴 그리피스 분)은 타고난 예술가지만 유명 화가들의 그림을 위조해 그려서 경매 시장에 갖다 파는 것을 즐기며 살아간다. 보넷의 외동딸 니콜(Nicole Bonnet: 오드리 헵번 분)은 그런 아버지를 걱정하지만 위조 작품을 그리는 일에만 열중한 아버지는 그녀의 말을 듣지 않는다. 그러던 어느 날, 보넷은 비너스 조각상을 박물관에 기증하겠다는 뜻을 밝힌다. 니콜은 조각은 그림과 달리 위조가 어렵다며 그를 말린다. 하지만 평소 보넷을 위대한 예술품 소장가라고 굳게 믿고 있는 그리몬트 박물관 관장은 비너스 조각상의 진위를 가리지도 않은 채 보넷의 비너스 조각상을 박물관에 버젓이 전시해 놓는다. 마침내 보넷의 조각상이 박물관에 전시되던 날 밤, 혼자 집에 있던 니콜은 그의 아버지가 그린 위조 그림을 훔치려고 잠입한 도둑과 맞닥뜨리는데...
