1960년에 만들어진 영화를 리메이크한 작품. 존 윈드햄의 소설을 원작으로 한다. 미드위치란 작은 마을에 알 수 없는 소리가 난 후, 마을 사람들이 모두 정신을 잃고 쓰러진다. 이 사건 직 후, 시집을 안 간 소녀부터 남편이 장기 출장을 갔던 부인 등 임신이 불가능했던 여인들까지 모두 10명의 여인들이 동시에 임신을 하게 된다. 밤마다 이상한 꿈을 꾸는 임신부들, 낙태를 하려던 여인조차 꿈을 꾸게 되고 아이를 낳기로 결심한다. 같은 날, 같은 시간, 10명의 여인들이 아이를 낳고 버넬 박사는 그 중 한명의 죽은 아이를 숨겨 해부를 한다. 은빛 머리에 광체를 내는 눈을 가진 9영의 아이들. 이들은 모두 초능력을 가진 아이들로서 이들과 접촉하는 사람들에게 계속 살인과 사고가 발생하는데... 1960년에 제작된 동명의 영국 영화를 존 카펜터 감독이 리메이크한 작품. 원작소설은 1957년 존 윈드햄의 "미드위치 쿠쿠"이다. 예전 영화는 당시에는 큰 인기를 끌지 못했지만, 1960년대 SF영화의 대표작으로 여겨질만큼 작품성을 인정받았다. 원작 영화 속에 등장하는 아이들은 획일적인 공산주의를 암시하는 수단이었지만, 1995년에 만들어진 이 영화에서는 인간성을 상실한 폭력적인 현대 어린이들을 상징하게 되었다.
