1943년 아프리카 카세린 요충지 튜니지아(Kasserine Pass Tunisia). 롬멜 장군이 이끄는 최강의 독일군과 격렬한 공방전을 전개 중인 미국 제2기갑병단에 패튼 장군(Gen. George S. Patton Jr. : 조지 C. 스캇 분)이 부임해온다. 화력의 열세로 독일군에게 연패를 하고 있던 이 기갑병단을 재건해야 할 병단장으로서 유능한 부관 브래들리 소장과 함께 온다. 패튼은 기갑병단을 엄격한 훈련으로 강화하여 롬멜 군단을 분쇄한다. 그는 영국의 몽고메리 장군(Field Marshal Sir Bernard Law Montgomery : 마이클 베이츠 분)을 지원하기 위해 시칠리아섬 침공의 제2병단 사령관으로 영전되어 이탈리아로 재배치된다. 패튼은 자신의 공만을 세우려는 몽고메리 장군을 지원하지 않고 독단적인 결정으로 팔레보에 진격하여 가볍게 탈환한다. 몽고메리 측에서는 패튼의 이러한 결정을 탐탁해 하지 않으며, 패튼이 난공불락으로 여겨지던 메시나 탈환에 실패할 것이라고 기대한다. 메시나로 진격한 패튼은 무리한 강행군을 통해 부하들을 이끌며 몽고메리 장군보다 먼저 고지를 탈환하고 다시 한번 그의 위용을 과시한다. 그러나 어느 날 전쟁 노이로제에 걸린 병사들을 구타한 사건으로 사령관직에서 해임된다. 영국으로 전속을 명령받지만 그곳에서도 폭언을 하여 상부로부터 문책을 당한다.

트라키아 출신의 노예 스팔타커스(커크 더글러스)는 검투사를 훈련하는 바티아투스(피터 유스티노프)에게 팔려가게 된다. 경기장에서 훈련을 받던 스팔타커스는 동료 검투사를 이끌고 반란을 주도한다. 반란은 마을에서 마을로 퍼져가고 도망친 노예들이 합류하며 커다란 세력이 된다. 노예들은 스팔타커스를 따라 바다 건너 고향으로 돌아가기 위해 남하를 계속한다. 한편 수도 로마에서는 대립하는 두 원로원이 반란군을 각기 자신의 정치적인 입지를 강화하는 데 이용하려 한다.

아도니아(Adonijah: 죠지 샌더스 분)는 시바의 여왕(Sheba: 지나 롤로브리지다 분)을 찾아가 함께 솔로몬(Solomon: 율 브린너 분)에 대적할 것을 권유하며 마침내 시바의 여왕은 솔로몬의 지혜를 실험하고 그를 유혹하여 부족들에게서 신임을 잃게하기 위해 이스라엘을 방문한다. 하지만 시바의 여왕은 솔로몬의 지혜와 용기에 감탄하여 사랑에 빠지게 된다. 그로인해 솔로몬과 시바의 여왕은 국정에 소홀하게 되고 백성들의 원성과 타부족의 이간책에 의해 궁지에 몰리게 된다. 그러던 중 형 아도니아에 의해 암살될 위기에 처하며 마침내 전쟁을 일으키게 된다. 첫번째의 싸움에서 아도니아에게 참패를 당하게 되고 백성들은 도탄에 빠지며 형 아도니아가 궁궐을 점령하여 시바의 여왕을 백성들의 신판에 맡겨 돌을 던지도록 명령한다. 그 때 솔로몬은 이집트군을 맞아 대승리를 하고 궁으로 귀환하던 중 시바의 여왕이 돌에 맞아 광장에 쓰러져 있음을 발견한다. 솔로몬이 시바의 여왕에게 다가 서려는 순간 아도니아의 공격을 받게 되고 결투 끝에 형을 살해하게 된다. 또한 시바의 여왕은 이스라엘의 신전 앞에 깊이 사죄하고 용서를 빌며 본국으로 돌아가 자신의 백성들을 위해 힘쓸 것을 맹세한다. 그 순간 신의 계시가 내려져 이스라엘의 옛 영광이 찾아들고 시바의 여왕은 솔로몬의 아들을 잉태하였음을 고백하고 자신의 나라의 후계자로서 임명하여 서로의 우의를 다질 것을 맹세한다. 이로서 솔로몬과 시바의 여왕은 영원한 사랑을 간직하고 서로의 갈길로 나가게 된다
