이름 높은 총잡이 존 헨리(키퍼 서덜랜드)는 전쟁이 끝난 후 아버지(도날드 서덜랜드)가 있는 집으로 돌아온다. 전쟁 후 다시는 총을 잡지 않겠다는 존의 앞에 마을의 총잡이들은 그의 명성에 흠집을 내기위해 존를 도발하기 시작한다. 하지만 그때마다 아버지를 위해서 존은 화를 꾹 눌러참을 뿐이다. 자신이 없는 새 마을의 유지 맥커디(브라이언 콕스)는 마을의 땅들을 사모으기 시작했고, 그를 거부하는 사람들은 죽거나 헐값에 땅을 팔고 마을을 떠나야했다. 마을 사람들은 그에게 저항도 해보지만, 맥커디의 곁에는 유명한 총잡이 데이브 터너(마이클 윈콧)를 비롯하여, 어중이 총잡이들까지 버티고 있어 사람들은 공포에 떨뿐 저항이라곤 생각치도 못한다. 마을의 보안관은 맥커디의 횡포에 줄행랑을 친지 오래고, 사람들은 그 횡포에 하나 둘 씩 마을 떠나기 시작한다. 어느날 존의 옛정인 메리 앨리스(데미 무어)의 남편에게 맥커디는 존을 죽이던지 마을을 떠나라는 협박을 하게되고, 그녀의 남편은 결국 마을 떠나기로 결정한다. 이에 메리 앨리스는 존에게로 달려가 맥커디의 횡포에서 자신들을 구해달라고 하게 되는데...
