맨하탄에 사는 17살 리사, 모자 쇼핑을 나갔다가 거리에서 자신이 찾던 디자인의 모자를 쓴 버스 운전자를 발견하고 바디 랭귀지를 주고받는다. 운전 중이던 버스 기사는 리사를 신경쓰다가 신호를 보지 못하고 보행자를 치는 사고를 내고, 버스에 치인 여성은 죽게 된다. 한 사람의 생명을 앗아간 끔찍한 사고의 간접적인 유발 요인이자 목격자가 된 리사는 경찰에게 버스 기사의 과실을 축소시키는 거짓 진술을 하고 이내 후회에 빠진다. 죄책감으로 황폐해진 그녀는 가족, 친구, 선생님, 무엇보다 자기 자신을 잔인하게 괴롭히기 시작한다. 그런 그녀에게 마주해야 하는 한 가지 진실이 있다. 어린 청년의 이상이 현실과 타협이라는 어른 세계의 룰을 만나 무너지는 과정에 있다는 것.

소설가이자 대학교수인 톰 릭스는 제자와의 스캔들로 학교에서 추방당하고 아내와 딸마저 등을 돌린다. 접근금지 명령을 받은 톰은 딸을 만나기 위해 무작정 파리를 찾는다. 멀리서나마 딸을 볼 수 있다는 기대감으로 행복해하던 것도 잠시 파리에 도착하자마자 모든 소지품을 도둑맞게 되고 불법 이민자들이 사는 누추한 호텔에서 생활하게 된다. 호텔 주인의 도움으로 미스터리한 야간 경비 일을 얻게 되지만 힘든 일상은 계속 반복되고 절망감과 고독에 휩싸인 채 오직 소설을 쓰겠다는 집념으로 하루하루를 버티는 톰. 어느 날 예술가들이 모이는 살롱의 파티에 참석하게 된 톰은 관능적이면서 지적인 매력을 발산하는 여인 마르짓을 만나게 된다. 파리 5구에 위치한 마르짓의 집에서 다시 만난 두 사람은 사랑을 나누게 되고 절망에 내몰린 자신의 이야기를 들어주며 위로해 주는 마르짓에게 깊게 빠져드는 톰. 오후 4시, 마르짓을 만나기 위해 그녀의 아파트를 찾던 톰은 어느 순간 자신 주변에 이상한 일들이 벌어지고 있다는 사실을 느끼게 된다. 협박하던 옆 방 건달이 끔찍한 시체로 발견되자 살인 용의자가 되어 경찰에게 검거된 톰은 마르짓에 대한 놀라운 사실을 알게 되는데... 매일 오후 4시, 나와의 약속을 지키면 내가 평생 당신을 지켜줄게!

A man has a mysterious power which causes the death of each person he condemns.

A story of a dropout out of a succesful career and a loving family. He goes to a local railroad station, then checks into a hotel and refuses to leave despite visits by a psychiatrist and his own son. He watches people daily at the station. A tv reporter is trying to come up with a story which would help him to save his job. He likes to chase women and the dropout's wife is one of his targets. He gets interested in the story of her husband and tries to make a program about mysterious individual. Once the tv crew arrives to the scene, the subject tries to hide and ends up on the roof of the station, where he catches a glimpse of sunshine - the "smaller sky" - before stepping onto a glass roof and falling to his death.
