고속도로에서 작은 교통사고를 낸 범죄심리학자 카렌은 지나가던 자동차에 도움을 청해 견인차가 있는 곳까지 함께 동승하게 된다. 그 차에는 프랭크와 레이앤이라는 젊은 부부가 타고 있었는데, 여행 중 간이 휴게소에 들른 프랭크는 그 곳에서 레이앤의 간통 사실을 알고 크게 화를 내다 홧김에 권총으로 레이앤을 쏘아 죽이고 만다. 프랭크가 카렌마저 쏘려고 하는 순간 카렌은 차에서 탈출하여 우연히 가속화 연구소에 이른다. 실수로 시간 역행 구역으로 들어간 카렌은 20분전의 과거로 다시 돌아가게 되고 살인 사건을 막을 수 있는 기회가 그녀에게 다시 주어지게 된다. 그러나 사건을 막으려던 카렌의 노력에도 불구하고 일은 걷잡을 수 없이 커지기만 하고 카렌은 자신의 시간여행으로 빚어진 엄청난 일들을 수습하기 위해 계속해서 시간역행구역으로 들어간다.
