On an obscure Pacific Island just north of Australia, the Japanese Empire has operated a prisoner of war camp for Australian soldiers. At the close of World War II, the liberated POWs tell a gruesome tale of mass executions of over eight hundred persons as well as torture style killings of downed Australian airmen. In an attempt to bring those responsible to justice, the Australian Army establishes a War Crimes Tribunal to pass judgement on the Japanese men and officers who ran the Ambon camp. In an added twist, a high ranking Japanese admiral is implicated, and politics become involoved with justice as American authorities in Japan lobby for the Admiral's release. 베트남 전쟁에서 실제 있었던 사건을 영화화했다. 당시 뉴요커지의 다니엘 랭 기자가 최초로 공개했던 사건이다. 에릭슨은 베트남에 온 지 한 달도 안 된 신참 군인. 그는 그의 소대원들이 정찰 임무 도중 마을에 잠입해 자고 있던 마을 처녀를 납치해 윤간하고 살해하자 울분을 느끼고 상부에 이 사실을 알린다. 하지만 군 책임자들은 밝혀 좋을 일이 아니라며 오히려 에릭슨을 질책하고 후환이 두려워진 동료 소대원들은 에릭슨의 입을 막으려고 그를 살해하려고 한다. 좌절감에 빠진 에릭슨은 우연히 군목사를 만나 그 살인 사건을 토로하고, 민간인 강간 및 살인 사건에 가담한 동료 소대원 네 명은 군사 재판에 회부되어 유죄 판결을 받는다.

부시에 중령의 호주 경기병 연대는 큰 전투에 투입되지 못하고 늘 뒷전에 서는 예비 병력이다. 1917년 4월 영연방군이 가자전투에서 또 패배하자 부시에 연대는 쇼벨장군을 지원하러 칸 유니스를 거쳐 아바산 전진기지로 출동한다. 이때 척후 활동 중 후랑크가 적탄에 부상을 입어 첫 사망자가 발생한다. 후랑크의 후임으로 온 데이브 미첼 신병은 말이 달아날까봐 고삐를 잡고 있다가 말이 날뛰는 바람에 부상을 입고 야전병원에 입원하고, 그 곳에서 간호원 앤과 친해진다.

When he tells it around, a gang of crooks follows and threatens him and his daughter, because they know there are 50 million dollars in the wreck. Helicopter pilot Barney helps Gibbie against them, risking his life thereby.

When a 747 crashes shortly after take-off, the sole survivor is the pilot. Virtually unhurt, he and the investigators look for the answers to the disaster. Meanwhile mysterious deaths occur in the community and only a psychic, in touch with the supernatural, can help the pilot unravel the mystery surrounding the doomed plane.

A mysterious faith healer, Gregory Wolfe, appears and seems to cure the boy. Rast's wife Sandy falls in love with Wolfe, but the powerful interests behind Rast's career, represented by geriatric monster Doc Wheelan are less happy with events.

A group of Australian SAS regiment soldiers are deployed to Vietnam around 1967/8 and encounter the realities of war, from the numbing boredom of camp life and long range patrols, raids and ambushes where nothing happens, to the the terror of enduring mortar barrages from an unseen enemy. Men die and are crippled in combat by firefights and booby traps, soldiers kill and capture the enemy, gather intelligence and retake ground only to cede it again whilst battling against the bureaucracy and obstinacy of the conventional military hierarchy. In the end they return to civilization, forever changed by their experiences but glad to return to the life they once knew.
