숫기 없고 요령 없는 존재감 제로 사이먼(제시 아이젠버그). 회사의 상사, 동료, 심지어 가족에게까지도 투명인간 취급을 당하며 무기력한 일상을 보내던 사이먼은 우연히 지하철에서 꿈의 이상형 한나(미아 바시코브스카)를 만나지만 소심한 성격 탓에 제대로 된 말 한마디 건네지 못한다. 그러던 어느 날, 사이먼과 정반대의 성격을 가졌지만 완벽하게 같은 모습을 한 '분신' 제임스(제시 아이젠버그)가 회사에 입사하게 된다. 자신감 넘치는 성격과 섹시한 매력을 가진 제임스는 순식간에 회사의 인기남이 되고 사이먼의 멘토를 자청하며 그를 돕지만, 이내 사이먼의 삶까지 파고 들며 모든 것을 빼앗으려 한다. 같지만 서로 다른 사이먼과 제임스, 그리고 한나. '사랑' 이라는 달콤한 악몽에 빠져버린 이들의 운명은 점차 복잡해져 가는데...

메리는 상습적으로 폭력을 휘두르는 남편 스티븐과 이혼한 후 서둘러서 집을 구한다. 집은 낡고 허름하지만 메리는 그곳에서 일하는 조지와 친해지고 대학에도 다니며 낯선 생활에 정착하려고 노력한다. 그러던 어느 날, 이사 올 때부터 있었던 전화기가 울리고 낯선 여자, 로즈가 바비를 찾는다. 메리는 그런 사람은 없다고 말해주지만 낯선 여자는 막무가내다. 둘은 결국 서로 다른 시간대를 살아가고 있다는 사실을 깨닫게 되고, 메리는 상상도 할 수 없는 공포와 마주하게 되는데...

A group of friends escaping the city for a weekend away have a simple plan, to tour the coast for a relaxing weekend. Things hit a snag when one of the friends spots a seductive, sultry young woman waving for help off the shore of one of many secluded islands along the coast. Reaching out to rescue her turns deadly and they risk everything to get off the island alive.

낯선 세계의 기묘한 노인 무리를 찍은 이 작품은, 이들의 가학적이고 원초적인 행동들을 여과 없이 보여준다. 수시로 등장하는 방뇨·자위·반달리즘 등 도덕성의 한계를 넘어선 행위들을 이해하긴 쉽지 않으나, 마치 로우파이 비디오테이프 같은 느낌의 화면을 따라가다 보면 이들이 그들만의 세상에서 그들만의 유희를 즐기고 있음을 알 수 있다. 그 유희를 관찰하는 감독의 시선은, 사진작가 다이안 아버스가 피사체를 바라보던 시선과 닮았다.

Family man Lloyd Turner (Ayoade) is facing up to his 40th birthday with the prospect of a new decade mouldering in debt and mediocrity.
