Lorenzo Hagerman (Mexico City, 1969) started his career as a still photographer. In 1991 he worked as a correspondent at the start of the Yugoslav Wars. For over twenty years he has worked as a Director of Photography for documentary and fiction features.

‘미국에 가면 모든 것이 잘 될 거야’라는 부푼 희망을 안고 멕시코 화물 열차에 몸을 싣는 수천 명의 사람들. 그 중에는 홀로 여정에 오르는 아이들도 많다. 대부분이 멕시코와 중앙아메리카 출신인 이 아이들은, 더 나은 삶을 살기 위해 2,300km가 넘는 거리를 이동하는 위험을 기꺼이 감수한다.
아카데미상 후보작인 이 영화는 미국 국경을 향해 떠나는 아이들의 멀고 험난한 여정을 카메라에 담고 있다. 올가와 프레디처럼 친척을 찾아 미국으로 가는 아이들도 있고, 케빈처럼 가족을 부양하기 위한 일자리를 찾으러 미국으로 가는 아이도 있다. 이런 여정은 몇 달에서 때로는 몇 년까지 걸리기도 한다. 확고한 결심과 용기를 가진 이 아이들은 새로운 삶을 살 수 있을 거라는 희망을 가지고 있지만, 절망과 슬픔 또한 간직하고 있다.
미국으로 이주하는 아이들의 참혹하고도 애처로운 모습이 담긴 ‘위치 웨이 홈’은 그 인간적인 내용에 초점을 두고 있다. 미국의 계속되는 멕시코와의 담쌓기 정책을 바탕으로 는 미국으로 가기위해 엄청난 용기와 의지로 위험에 맞서는 아이들을 통해 이민에 대해 탐구한다. 영화는 몇몇 어린 이민자들이 ‘괴물’이라 부르는 화물 열차를 타고 멕시코로부터 미국으로 가는 여정에 동행한다. 감독은 온두라스에서 온 9살의 올가와 프레디가 미네소타에 있는 가족을 찾아 가는 여행, 밀매업자들로부터 버림 받고 멕시코의 소년원에 들어간 10살의 엘살바도르 출신 호세, 그리고 뉴욕에 가서 일해 가족들에게 돈을 부치려는 14살 온두라스 소년 케빈의 이야기를 담는다. 이들 모두에게서 보이지 않는 희망과 용기, 좌절과 슬픔이 묻어난다.
