Told through a looping, non-linear narrative from each of the characters' points of view, the film reconstructs the stories of a Yugoslav hit man, his former lover and her police officer boyfriend, as their paths cross in New York.

스텔라와 조, 롭 등 한 집에서 기거하고 있는 룸메이트들은 클럽에 모여 파티를 즐긴다. 춤추고 술을 마시던 그들은 우연히 가장 짜릿했던 경험에 대해 이야기하게 되는데 그들 중 누군가 심령 게임을 하던 때가 가장 짜릿했다고 털어놓는다. 이에 그들은 모두 호기심에 이끌려 외딴 창고로 찾아들어가고 밤 12시가 되는 무렵 심령 게임을 시작한다. 게임을 리드하던 루스는 게임 시작전 주의 사항을 이야기하는데 그것은 자신이 게임을 끝내기 전에 유리컵에서 손가락을 떼어내면 안된다는 것이다. 그럴 경우 그들이 불러낸 영혼이 왔던 곳으로 돌아갈 수 없기 때문이라는 것. 게임이 진행되고 유리잔은 그들의 질문에 맞춰 빠르게 움직인다. 그리고 그 유리잔이 가리킨 그들의 미래는 죽음, 그의 이름을 묻는 질문에는 D ? J ? I ? N ? N이라는 글자를 지적한다. 그 후 컵이 빠르게 돌기 시작하자 갑자기 리암이 컵을 바닥에 내리쳐 부숴 버리고는 어딘가로 달려간다. 루스를 비롯한 친구들은 찜찜한 마음을 가지고 집으로 돌아오는데 그 이후 그들은 하나씩 죽어가기 시작한다. 애니와 스텔라가 죽은 후 그들은 하숙집의 주인인 베커가 디진에 관련된 기사를 모으고 있었던 것을 알고 그를 의심한다. 그 동안에도 죽음은 계속되고 조와 웹스터가 집에서 의문의 죽음을 당한다. 디진은 롭의 몸에 들어가 친구들을 하나씩 죽이고 있었던 것이다. 결국 혼자만 살아남게 된 리암은 자신의 아버지가 디진을 불구덩이 속으로 던져버린 장본인이라는 것을 알게 되고 베커가 자신을 돕고 있었음을 깨닫지만 그때는 너무 늦은 상태. 디진은 리암의 몸 속으로 들어가 리암의 아버지에게 복수를 한 후 세상 속으로 유유히 사라져간다.
The film is notable for presenting a more human Jesus, compared to more solemn portrayals in earlier films; here Jesus laughs and cries like anyone else. Among other things, he weeps at Joseph’s funeral, throws stones in Lake Galilee when meeting Simon Peter and James son of Zebedee for the first time, dances at the wedding at Cana, and starts a water-splashing fight with his disciples as well. Satan is portrayed as a man in modern dress (and as a woman in red). During his temptation of Jesus, he shows him the Earth from the vantage point of space. Satan also shows Jesus images of wars and destruction carried out in his name. The film adds an apocryphal Roman historian named “Livio” who watches and comments as events unfold; he is presumably named after Livy.
