파리에서 형사로 근무하는 막스는 은행 강도 검거에 잇달아 실패하면서 무슨 수를 써서라도 보란 듯 현장에서 범인을 잡겠다는 일념에 사로잡혀있다. 전직 판사인 그는 정황상 범죄 사실이 분명한 강도를 증거불충분으로 풀어준 후 자책감으로 법복을 벗었을 만큼 올 곧으면서도 강박적 성향이 있다. 어느 날 그는 20년 전 함께 군복무를 한 아벨을 우연히 만난다. 파리 외곽 낭테르에 사는 아벨은 자신을 고물상이라 소개하지만 실상 그가 하는 일은 비슷한 처지의 동네 건달들과 함께 건설현장에서 훔친 각종 자재를 밀매하는 것이다. 막스는 아벨에게 자신이 경찰이라는 사실을 숨긴 채, 간접적으로 그를 사주하여 일당에게 은행 강도 짓을 벌이게 한 후 현장에서 검거해 자신의 염원을 이루겠다는 계획을 세운다. 막스는 전문 강도를 잡지 못할 것이라면 뜨내기 강도라도 잡아야 한다며 직속 상사를 설득하여 지지를 얻고, 상사는 막스가 낭테르 담당 경감 로진스키의 도움을 받을 수 있도록 조치를 취한다. 계획에 따라 막스는 아벨의 동거녀이자 매춘부로 일하는 릴리에게 손님으로 위장해 접근하고 인근 은행의 지점장 행세를 한다. 막스가 바라던 대로 릴리는 아벨에게 그 은행을 털 것을 권유하고, 일당은 현금 수송이 이뤄지는 날을 작전일로 택한다. 막스의 지휘 하에 현장에서 대기 중이던 경찰의 손에 일당이 체포되는 순간까지는 모든 것이 순조로이 진행되는 듯했다. 그러나 경찰서로 돌아와서 보니 이미 로진스키는 이번 일에서 막스가 어떤 역할을 담당했는지를 파악하고 있었다. 하지만 차마 막스를 체포하지는 못하는 로진스키는 릴리에게 모든 것을 뒤집어 씌워 아벨의 공범으로 구속하려 한다. 릴리를 단순히 이용하기만 한 것이 아니라 그녀에게 묘한 감정을 품고 있던 막스는 로진스키를 총으로 쏘아 죽이고, 이로써 자신도 그 고물상 범죄자 일당 대열에 합류하게 된다.

This one is generally looked upon as the best version of the old-fashioned melodrama by Jules Mary.Riccardo Freda,who was mainly known for his horror movies,tried also his hand at spy thrillers in the wake of James Bond ("Coplan Ouvre Le Feu à Mexico") ,and had a penchant for old French melodramas (before "Roger la Honte" ,he redid "Les Deux Orphelines " -D.W.GRiffith's "orphans of the storm-. Georges Géret replaces Lucien Coedel and Irene Pappas takes on Maria Casarès's part of his mistress.Freda 's movie is more compact ,with a running time of 105 min,whereas Cayatte's version (1945-46) spread over two episodes with a total time exceeding 3 hours.It also benefited from the use of color .But all in all,it's the same old story.

Political intrigue and psychological drama run parallel. The queen is in seclusion, veiling her face for the ten years since her husband's assassination, longing to join him in death.
